Perhaps do some tests when you have access to phenolphthalein again, on what colour change is observed from phenol red and tumeric, using the titre value (the amount of base you added) as determined from using phenolphthalein.

That way if you do have to use one of your alternatives at some point in the future, you have an idea on what colour change to aim for.
