  • Brief whine on start up

    Hi all,

I've noticed sometimes when I'm starting my car on bio, there is a very brief whine sound, about half a second after the engine actually turns over. This whining sound last for about a half second... but I'm just wondering what it actually is. Would it be the injection pump?

    Any hints would be appreciated!!

    Cheers, Steve.

Steve, I've noticed the same thing - it is pretty high pitched. I hope someone may put a little light on this for us. I was a little worried about it for awhile, but have now got over it, but still wonder.

Yeah, I'm using centrifugal pumps in my biodiesel processor, and they will occassionally shrill if they have something to pump, but nowhere to pump to (ie the pump outlet pipe is blocked).

I'm glad I'm not the only one and that you haven't had too many dramas regarding the whine to date too!!

      Cheers, Steve.

I started the car one morning and there was a loud Scereech from under the bonnet. I stopped the motor and opened the bonnet to be almost knocked over by the neighbours cat departing the engine bay.
I restarted the engine with no unusual noises

Ok (), I'll check for a cat under my bonnet when I get home.

              Hi Rasteve and Yorta2,
Perhaps you should tell us what make, model, engine and year manufacture that you have?

Aprt from the cat idea there might be a few more flowing with a bit more info.

              Cheers,
              Cameron

I'm happily driving a Peugeot 505 SRDT, with an XD2s engine, 1983 (370,000kms). Rotary injection pump.

                Cheers, Steve.

And I'm in a 1993 KZN130 Toyota Surf, with a 3 Litre Turbo Diesel (1KZTE) engine. Two very different cars.

could be a dry bush in the rear of the starter

I have a 92 Terrano that had the very same issue, high pitched squeel just after motor turns over, turns out that it was one of the bearings in the throwout assembly in the starter motor.... cost less than $10 to fix, but took a little while to drop the starter in and out...

Re: Brief whine on start up

Thanks Guys, but it's not the fan belt nor the starter. It is something in the fuel system - probably the injector pump - but doesn't seem to be a problem (at least not in the short term).
