  • Drums for storing oil

I'm starting to collect a few 25 litre drums of oil now, and as I need to return the 25 litre drums to my suppliers, I want to empty the drums into some 60 litre steel drums.

Due to the steel drum's lack of use, they've developed a minor rust coating on the inside. If I were to put the oil straight into these drums, would filtering remove the rust to a suitable degree, say at 5 microns, or is there something else I should know about (eg. a chemical reaction with the rust)?

    Cheers!

Rust particles are likely to be pretty small, (smalled than 5um), and since they are metal could do more harm than bits of flour or potato of the same size.

In realtity though, it probably isn't much different from what is inside a lot of old metal fuel tanks.

Personally, I would buy some rust converter (phosphoric acid) and flush the drums with that first, then rince it out with a small amount of methanol.
    Cheers,

    Ben.
