  • Broken CAV filter glass

G'day, The glass of the CAV filter broke today. I don't know why! I changed the filter this morning after it clogged up and put it all back together...perhaps I did the bolt up too tightly.

I went to start the engine at home and got nothing so opened the bonnet and saw the glass in pieces. It's a wonder I got the car back after taking it for a run today and I have no idea when it happened.
I use Delphi 296 filters so the glass shouldn't be a special size.

Where can I get a replacement and how much do they cost?
    Cheers -Andy

    Re: Broken CAV filter glass

I now remember hearing the glass break and fall as the car was sitting there....I think the bolt was too tight and maybe the sudden drop in temperature added stress too!? It went from 21deg c to 13deg c in a couple of hours with a 25% rise in humidity. It is thick glass though.
Doing a search I've realised that the glass section is relatively common and I should be able to pick one up in Lismore along with a spare in case it happens again.
Does anyone here keep a spare glass in case this happens? I can't see that the car will go anywhere unless this is replaced and it would be a PITA if it happened somewhere in Woop woop.

You can get a spare from almost any diesel injection specialist where they sell CAV/Delphi filters. Price??? I have no idea.

One way to get going in an emergency is to simply bypass the filter until you get to a place where you can buy a replacement. I wouldn't like doing this if the CAV is your only fuel filter, but if it's before your original filter there would be no problems.

Cheers for that. I did consider a bypass, however the CAV is the only filter and I'd need to get an inline filter I imagine. This is probably what I need to have additional to the CAV anyway, at least until I clean the tank out.
There was some sediment in the glass so I've probably unlocked a 28 year old Dinodiesel monster!
So far the Bio has been great.

A cheap inline filter would always do as a bypass if the glass breaks again. I've only had it happen once.

Running an inline and a CAV may put more stress on your IP?

If you buy your CAV filters on ebay in lots of 10, they are cheap enough to change before and after winter or every 3 months and always have a spare in the trunk.

This talk of filters made me pop the bonnet and have a look for mine, so I know what to change should I ever need to...

Think I could find it? Not a chance. It's all nicely fitting black plastic bits. I think I'm gonna have to buy the Haynes book for my pug.

              Re: Broken CAV filter glass

Just the other day I bought a few new CAV type filters from Fleet Guard.
Bought 4 elements for a total of $20.
At that price ya can change reguarly. Being a bigger element than the inline ones that supa Creap now sells at $4, ya got a bargain.

On the subject of the glass bowl, I see em advertised for $15.

Just a note to remember. With this type of filter the fuel enters the housing, passes through the element into the glass bowl, then exits the housing. So if you see anything in the bowl this will indicate the filter is well passed it's change by date. The idea is the element conglomerates the microscopic water particles in the element. When the element absorbes as much water as it can hold drops start to then pass to the glass bowl, as a visual indication to change the element.

If you take the time to check out your OEM filter with the sensor in the bottom of the filter and light on ya dash you will find the same thing happens there as well. The fuel passes through the element before entering the sensor section of the filter.

That's some great help everyone. The forum has life!...I wasn't sure when I first posted if a response would take a week or more!? The car could sit there for that long, but now I'm armed with some solid info, I'll know what to look for, where, and at what price.
George reckons having an inline filter additional to the CAV filter may cause the injector pump to have a hissy fit, so I won't take my chances, I'll stick to one or the other.

As far as seeing sediment in the bowl, well it's the second time since running Biodiesel that I've changed the filter. That is almost 5800Km in just over 3 months (13 weeks). I generally do more mileage than this but Biocit has been out of action for about 5 weeks of this.

The first time I changed the filter was the second week of running Bio and when I changed it on Saturday it was running at about 50% power.....the torque was still there but I couldn't drive much faster than 80kph.
I read that Delphi filters are very fine. Should I go for a more larger micron rating like the Fleetguard filters?
I probably should get the tank off and clean it out too.

What pug are you driving Suzy? The 'nicely fitting black plastic bits' makes me think it's a newer pug, not a 'cooler' one.

                    Re: Broken CAV filter glass

I choofed off down to the servo on the pushy to get an inline filter and fitted it. When I went to redirect the fuel lines away from the CAV set up, one of the lines ripped clean apart! The rubber was badly perished and the inside of the line was a black goo of dissolved rubber. The other line is covered in a cloth mesh which is wet so probably ruptured too.

I will have to replace these fuel lines with compatible ones. Where is the place to get these? Are the supercheap fuel lines bio friendly or would I have to go to enzed or somewhere specialised?

Surprisingly, there was less smoke with the inline filter and more responsive power....but no filter will last with the gunk that was in that line so I'll be changing all lines and cleaning the tank before the next filter change is due.

No, stick with the CAV filter, its about 5 icron and is fine. The fleetgaurd is a bit worse not sure how much but the CAV as I said is fine.

Can be bought for about $4 in a box of 20. Good to have around when they start to block up. I put hot bio in one day and got 3 km down the road, new filter required. The fuel tank is a lot cleaner now but I would not recommend doing it to you or anyone else unless you had spare filters at hand, never leave home without one.

Any Farm tractor place would carry them as well. Bareco supply generic CAV bits to suit MF tractors and the like. Just in case you get caught in the back blocks with a broken bowl..

Go all that. Thanks, I'll know where to look now. For the moment the inline filter is holding well, however the rubber lines are badly perished.
Who sells viton/or compatible rubber lines?
