  • Viscosity meter

I would like to check the viscosity of my fuel.
Do i have to bye a viscosity meter or can they be home made.
If they can be home made, how.

    Hello Dodge

It depends on what you wish to check.
I have done a lot of viscosity testing using a home made viscosimeter but the answer is not in centistokes.
However, for less than $1, it gives you far more information than the next best backyard testing available.
Have a look at the World Famous dr Pepper Viscosimeter (Pat Pend)

      Thanks Tilly.
Just would like to know if my bio is thicker or thinner than dino diesel, and if i use it the way its explained in the link in your post it should give me a very good indication of how complete the reaction is.
I think it would be a very useful and simple tool.

Dodge, you may want to look at Robert's thread -

            Re: Viscosity meter

Ok i have been reading a lot about quality test's and how much glycerine and di and mono glycerides that have no been converted, and have been thinking about the fact that svo users burn all that through there engines with no problems by heating the oil to reduce the viscosity.

My question is does it matter about how far the reaction has gone when making biodiesel, and is it more important that the viscosity is correct.

              Hello Dodge

              It depends on the engine

                Re: Viscosity meter

So then some engines can tolerate glycerine and other stuff and some engines dont.

                Thanks Tilly.
