  • KOH at 85%

is there any issues with using 85% KOH appart from adding more?
or does it need to be more pure?

It donsn't get much more pure than that.

      Re: KOH at 85%

Higher purity costs more. If you compensate the "catalyst amount" for the purity and use the 85% to mix up the titration solution, you will compensate for the KOH purity in the titration automatically.
Thus, the amount of KOH to be added per litre is:
      (7.0/Purity)+Titration amount g/Litre
Thus if you have 85% KOH and titrate at 4.5, the your total KOH per litre would be (7.0/0.85)+4.5 = 8.24+4.5=12.75g/L

        Re: KOH at 85%

KOH readily comes in up to 92 % purity as far as I know.

As Tony says its not hard but I would add to Tony's comments in saying that you should titrate using your 85% KOH if you use his maths.

If you titrate with NaOH its quite different. You need to multiply your titration value amount by 1.4 and divide this number by the purity as well.

i am using >98% NaOH. i wouldn't trust 85% KOH (or NaOH) because what are the remaining 15% percent??? can they f**k up the reaction? who can guarantee that the 15% stay inert and are drained with the glycerin layer?
          any input/comments?

The other 15% does not impact on the reaction. Many people use KOH to produce quality biodiesel.
KOH benefits include faster dissolving and a liquid byproduct which can be neutralised to provide a fertiliser. These are real advantages and make a significant difference to many people.

When in doubt about the purity or ratio run a simple 1L minibatch to test the titration value. Easy to do and gives some confidence in the materials.
