  • Reactor Choices

    HI there,

newbie question - so please be gentle
I have read a lot of info on Bio and am still keen to pursue -

Some good advice from this site:
    • dont do it for pure commercial reasons
    • secure your WVO supply, and
    • have somewhere to do it..

So I can answer all these in the affirmative, (once the "bio shed" is battened and clad) what I am keen to understand is...

are there any recommendations as to which process to use for local conditions and the goal of feeding the BD into my 4.2Patrol.

    Re: Reactor Choices

    Tando,
The processor you use depends on the size of the batrch you plan to make and whether you want to buy something that someone else has decided is the way to go.

You can make biodiesel in a cool drink bottle, 20/25 litre chemical drum, 60 litre oil drum, 200 litre drum or even a 1000 litre IBC. Some people even use a hot water system as the reactor vessel. Commercially available processors generally are limited to 100 or 200 litre batches.
Providing your oil is dry and your titration technique gves reliable results, you should be able to make consistently high quality biodiesel for your vehicle using any processor.

Just start small so that the mistakes you will make are also small ones.
Grow the batch size as your experience grows and the risks of making mistakes reduces. It is always a good idea to make a "Proof" batch of 1 litre, before committing your oil, caustic and methanol on a large batch.

Perhaps you need to do more research before deciding.

    Regards,
    Tony
