I am new here as well but am going to make my biodiesel.
    i have a supply of
[1] cottonseed used cooking oil. is it ok to use for biodiesel.
[2] I am getting confused with the washing, some say yes some say no ?
should i wash it or not.

    Re: need advice

I think nearly everyone advocates washing. Robert Sharman (tasmanenergy.com.au) does not use washing in his BD book but he instead lets it settle for a very long time. This may be less than ideal and it doesn't give you the best BD (still has methanol in it for example).

Some wash for up to 9 times (first one very gently). Others do a prewash at the end of the mix to reduce the number of later washes. Some only do a prewash and then let it settle for many days (depending on the tolerance of vehicle).

Generally, people do wash the BD after the glycerine has settled and been removed, either with or without a prewash.

I am heading towards a prewash and then a stirwash later.

Hi Gibbo,, Cotton seed oil makes good biodiesel, in fact i'm yet to learn of a veg oil that doesn't work.
Washing is important if you want to remove stuff from the fuel which may,, MAY damage your engine or fuel system.
A Farmer came to the J29 meeting with a sample of bee's wax, which he asked about making BD with. Still haven't had time to heat it in the microwave and do a titration and test batch. This one i'm not sure about.
One interesting thing about cotton seed oil is the fact that it can spontaneously combust So dont leave any rags soaked in cotton seed oil laying about in full sunlight.
      Good luck,,, Darren.

        Re: need advice

the reason for washing the biodiesel is to :
        1. Remove residual methanol
        2. Remove soaps and residual byproduct
        from the biodiesel.

By removing the methanol and allowing a minimum of 1 month settling, the residual soaps and byproduct can settle from the biodiesel.

Methanol can be removed from the biodiesel by distillation.
After settling, the biodiesel can be decanted from any soaps and byproduct which has settled from the biodiesel.

I have not heard of any reports of IP or other damage from using de-methed, well settled biodiesel.
