  • Is solder degraded by Birdiesel?

I'm considering soldering a brass fitting at the bottom of my reactor tank.

    G'day,

No the solder should not be affected by the bio diesel, none of the chemicals used or the end product are corrosive (acid in nature). Make sure the fitting will not be subject to any movement otherwise cracks will occur and the liquid will leak (solder work hardens very easily). If you use an acid based flux, make sure you clean the area around where the flux was applied thoroughly before adding the chemicals to make bio (the reaction to do so is alkaline in nature) or you may end up with a small but violent reaction while the acid and alkali neutralise.

    Hope that helps.

Then again, copper should be avoided in any biodiesel plant as it is an oxidation catalyst.

Should'nt prove too much of problem for home user storage times.
