  • Coffee Roasting

I know it's way off topic , probably why it would go here.

In my boredom from everything work and play , I decided to get a coffee grinder for Christmas. Something about getting the wrong grind every second purchase really annoys me.

So off to Myer and get a Sunbeam Cafe series grinder. my impressions after purchasing are still good. I bought some crap roasted beans to play with and get the right grind settings and then went and got some good ones. Now I'm happy.

But like all things I got to wonder why I couldn't roast some myself.

Out came the popcorn maker and off I went to the local large retailer in town. I must say that buying green beans is a lot cheaper than roasted
Now I enjoy freshly roasted beans every morning with the perfect cup of coffee.

My next step will be to find the right origin beans to mix and get my own brew.

    Until next time.

I purchased the beans from Merlo coffee in Bowen Hills. All the larger coffee roasters will sell green beans. Just ask.

And it's the best I've tasted for a while , other than the professional coffee's in Merlo or DiBella.

            Re: Coffee Roasting

I think I have worked out what I like.

the popcorn machine has seen better days but keeps on working. 3 tablespoons of green beans (heaped) for 4 1/2 minutes.

The more coffe , the quicker they roast. might have something to do with the hot air not being able to ascape ????
Anyway if I get it right it tastes good and better half is happy in the mornings.

I prefer Columbian and Nicuarguan beans. costs me $19 a kilo. not something I'm happy with but I'll kepp looking for better prices.

The Columbian bean is a dig fat bean and needs to be roasted longer than the Nic bean. this helps remove the husk that covers the bean. probably not a tasty part but none the less adds to the flavour.

The Nicuaruan bean is a small bean but not the smallest I've sean.
Where have I had that response before ?? It requires less roasting time to get a darker roast. the 2 together get's me whatlike.

            Happy roasting

                  Pictures as requested.
In the pictures are green beans, roasted beans of two different roasting times being 4 minutes 50 seconds and 5 minutes 10 seconds. The darker beans being the longer roast. my roaster the popcorn machine and my grinder. I did enjoy a very tasty coffee this morning from a mix of the 2.

Suggesting that 5 minutes with those beans in your popcorn roaster is the ideal?

I don't know because this morning I did two roasts and they browned faster than I would have liked in under five minutes
So hey suck it and see. I really wish I could get a better idea of what happens. Time will tell. I'll have to look for a better solution.

No need to worry, I did not consider the variuable of changing the type of beans, the time of day nor the other enviromental conditions, all things vary its just a matter of understanding why.

                          Hava

Yes I know what you mean. Coffee plays an important part of my day. It keeps me happy.

As for Roasting , it is a really simple process but you need to find a bean that you like the taste of first.
The timing of the roast will come after you work out how long your bean takes to roast and the envirnmental issues like sun / rain. etc.

If I roast in the sun the bean will brown faster than in the shade. I am currently using Columbian beans and roast for 5 minutes 20 seconds. this gives me a nice dark brown colour , just before the oils start to come out.

browse youtube and you should see lots of people doing the same thing. If I get a moment to make a video , I'll post it.
