Question: cleaning ethanol still

Hi,

Does anyone know the best way to clean the components of a still? In particular we are using 55 gallon steel drums for our mash but we are not sure how clean they are as they are not new.

Thanks, Danielle

Re: Question: cleaning ethanol still

Depending what they were used for, you need to take different actions.
  1. Oils - Use degreaser and / or detergents to remove all traces of the oils. Wash out with soapy water and rinse.
  2. Chemicals - Use a neutralising agent to make any acid/alkali neutral, wash out with water, rinse thoroughly. Vinegar may be used to help remove organic compounds.
  3. Ask manufacturer how to remove contaminants from drum.
If the drum is for producing ethanol fuel, then you only need to be clean enough so the yeast is not affected by the contaminant. If it is for human consumption, I would ensure that it is as clean as possible

BTW, the IRS boys will want to speak with you. The largest still allowed without a licence (in Australia) is 5 litres, and then only for distilling water or essential oils.

Regards,
Tony
