Obtaining WCO in Melbourne

I just ordered a new Hyundai i30 Turbo Diesel specifically to run a bio on. I'm not expecting (or wanting) to run on 100% bio - but a 50/50 blend would be fine.

Question is - I have approached two businesses for their waste oil. One business already has some old bloke that pays $30 for a 205ltr drum and the other business didnt want to sell or give it to me because he says he can be fined. ??? Is this true?

Where is the best place to get used oil?

Whats the best approach in asking businesses for their used oil?

I'm new here - this is a virgin post - so be nice.

Keep on asking around, thats really all you can do! I find small businesses are less targetted by big companies, and businessed that have recently changed hands. If you can get in before anyone else and keep a good relationship then your in with a chance.
As for approach, be yourself, explain what your doing with it, and do it after you'ce just spent money at their establishment. Continue to do so and compliment the meal so that they see your gratitude.
Never heard of people being fined...

You might try the shopping plazas. The fast food shops there have a dump on site that the put their oil in. This is then sold to whoever by the shopping plaza. If the fast food shop agrees you could do a drum transfer and pick it up from their door. This is good for you and them as they dont have to cart it, you get the oil and dont have to worry about the plaza management as you are not taking their oil. Well it is not theirs until it goes into the plaza dump vat.

Re: Obtaining WCO in Melbourne

If they (the restaurant) don't know they could be paid for it, Just offer them a reliable service for free,Please don't offer them to pay for it, Since starting the club in 2004 I've seen the WVO marketplace change form a waste resource that the restaurant had to pay to have removed, to today having a market value of as much as 20c a litre at the restaurant and as much as 80c a litre for WVO filtered, dewatered and stripped of FFA's. The stuff your likly to find will be full of water , food particulates and emulsified FFA's. Don't pay good money for the aformentioned crap you have to remove. ALSO in that time nothing has changed about the restaurant's responsablity to adhere to EPA and health dept. requirements to have the WVO removed and not stockpiled on site, as some restaurants and pubs are doing, holding out for a good price. At the end of the day they need it removed.

The trick is to find a large number of small users - don't go for fish & chip shops - go for small restaurants, bistros - places that aren't in a major eating area.

Just keep asking. Melbourne has about 2 million places that use oil I reckon - just keep trying..
