Storing Bio Diesel

I am new to this site and going through the research stage of making bio. So much to take in.
Can someone please tell me if you can store bio in 200 ltr plastic drums?
I have searched the site and can't seem to find any info on it.
Thanks
Daryl

Welcome to the forum.

As long as its a HDPE plastic drum or a metal drum, short term it will be fine. Longer term ensure the drum is full to minimise water and condensation forming and keep it in the dark.

The jury is still out on how log you can store like this. But the minimum is in the months.

Thanks for that Joe. I can get hold of the blue 200lt drums, will have to check if they are HDPE.

G'day Bricky and welcome to the forum.

Any reason you are going for plastic srotage drums? Here I can get them but at a cost of $20 each. (cut top out for excellent wash tank)
I found that many garages will GIVE you used 200 litre oil drums to take away for them. Saves them the trouble and time. Best place is where trucks and large machinery gets serviced.

Re: Storing Bio Diesel

I can also get metal drums, I thought plastic may last longer and stay a bit cleaner. Anyway it will be a while before I need any as I am just in the process of getting set up. We have access to oil which until now we have been throwing out.

It goes without saying that you will be no longer throwing your oil out, once you get started into Biodiesel.

One thing with the plastic drums some have a different thread on the bungs so a normal drum pump will not screw in. That's not a big problem and either type of drum would be suitable.

As for storage time, provided you have dried the bio properly it will store for at least 6 months. I had a full 200 litre metal drum that had been sitting for just on six months before I used it. It was still as good as the day it was put in the drum.

Good luck with getting started.

Re: Storing Bio Diesel

After not being able to get a 1200 ltr storage drum at a good price, I felt that one of those 1000 ltr plastic "pods" may be suitable. I think they come in different grades for use with different liquids include toxic chemicals.

Can anyone advise me on the right type (or code) to store biodiesel and at what price I could expect to secure one at?

I intend to mount it at a height and have it gravity feed through a sock filter into my vehicle.

Re: Storing Bio Diesel

SF,
You would be better served using a cartridge filter for filtering your biodiesel into your vehicle. A sock filter would require a pressure housing to be made, where the cartridge filters are made to take pressure.

just my 2c worth

Re: Storing Bio Diesel

If you are going to use an IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container, or 'pod') get a UV stablised one. You pay more (not much) for the UV stable ones as they are in demand for any use where they get left outside. Alternatively shelter it somehow. 1200lt of Bio on the ground is a big mess to clean up.

Just something to consider...

Re: Storing Bio Diesel

Thanks Tony & Zig
I have both the cartridge filter and sock filter and intend to just mount the pod high and gravity feed the biodiesel through the filter (??) into my vehicles.
To pump it into the pod I have a 30 litre per minute pump (also filtered with a cartridge filter) which will transfer fuel from the settling tank up into the pod. The final filter is just extra.

I will look for a UV resistant pod or two - any more info I need please.
