  • Sharing vege knowledge in WA via WARFA

    Hello good natured folks :-)

I'm posting this so people in other states without a vege collective that meets, can learn about what we have achieved in WA and the sort of activities that have been successful - or not...
I hope it is useful as a guide.

In WA we have been fortunate to have the WA Renewable Fuels Association running for ?? 9 years so far. Tony Clark has been a principal consistent leader of the group.

We have a domain name and website Western Australian Renewable Fuels Association and our own polo shirts with a nice logo on them. We've also got leaflets and business cards printed up.

Today, I've ordered some 600mm by 900mm posters on corflutes to go on steel A frames at the various displays we do around the place, and some bumper stickers.

We try to meet once a month, tho the committee chats via email more often to organise things.

We try to have a rotation of types of events we hold and these include Bonnets Up displays where two or three or four of us will put our vehicles up for public scrutiny. We let the local community news know and they do a photo and article for free. We get around 25 members of public at these events.

We also have Tech Talks where we will discuss and display various more technical issues related to vege use. Last meeting Tony spoke about injection pumps for example.

We also try to include a visit to members homes to check out what each other does.

All these are rotated around the metro area to encourage new comers along.

We participate in community fairs, hence the purchase of the A frames with our vehicles, much like a Bonnets Up display. In a week, we'll be at the Sunfair at the Uni WA where there will be lots of exhibitors on a wide range of energy efficient products. Three of us will be presenting on vege use at a special seminar tent.

We've also been invited by A Current Affair to be filmed for a segment, which they did well. A few weeks ago, I presented to 50 in a 4WD club who gave me a generally positive reception.

In general, I think we do a pretty good job at trying to promote the potential of using waste oil as fuel!

On the down side - there really is quite low real interest from the public. There is a lot of 'wow, can you really do that?' but not many converts.

The rise of common rail engines over the last decade makes a difference I feel, as does the time factor involved and also a general decrease in DIY skills and 'being handy'. Also people are nervous about vehicle warranty. Mind you, these same people are likely to have common rail, so not suited to SVO, but nevertheless, using SVO needs a certain boldness that not everyone possesses.

We know interest is also waning because the price of diesel is lower at the moment, and we are trying to build our capacity to deal with an increase in interest when the inevitable happens into the future. Hence the posters, the bumper stickers, the website, are all in place to be semi prepared for more people when they come.

We also find that people will come along and learn what they need, make our contact, then go away and do their conversions and not come back. That's the nature of the scene but it doesn't help build member numbers.

We try to keep our events to within our aims of promoting the use of renewable fuels, but it is easy for suggestions to come up for more purely social events. These are carefully spread through the year so families can attend if they wish, and of course are good to have. But they aren't so useful for newcomers to learn the scene.

We have NOT found that our activity has made any difference to the ease or difficulty of getting oil supplies. There are plenty more people in WA that run on vege than participate with WARFA. Us talking about it isn't going to dry up our supplies.

          What works:
          Rotating topics
          Rotating venues
Providing things that interest people, newcomers and old hands.

          I hope this helps.

            Thanks Tim.
I know about WARFA from general research. I've looked it up and also seen the Current affairs segment.
There is nothing over our way - but is still early days I guess.
What worries me about the SVO thing in particular is that vehicles which lend themselves to conversions are getting older and older.

I've started thinking about that recently.

Yes Socrates. I agree - so unless we can develop reliable tools to convert more modern - i.e. Common Rail diesels, our art will slowly be consigned to the vintage fleet.

The GP, general public, are quite keen to have the newest and the best - and sometimes for good reason. They are often safer, with more features.

I was talking to a work mate today about how he is looking at replacing his 2.5l 4 cyl TD Discovery that pulls his van along at a satisfactory pace on the flat with less than 200nm of torque and uses 6.6km/l. He can buy a newish V8 Landcruiser with 400nm of torque, and still use the same amount of fuel.

Despite this, we feel it IS important to keep promoting what we do, as it forces recognition there ARE alternatives to fossil fuel. WVO might not be the answer for everyone, but at least it confronts the blinkered thinking that there is only fossil fuel that will ever be suitable - hence we keep up our little crusade :-)
