Save a batch

Hello everyone, I recently made a batch of biodiesel, that just didnt work out.
My Titrarion was 2.2, so i added that to 5 to give me a 7.2 gms of lye to the litre.
Unfortunately i Stuffed up and only multiplied the 7.2 by 4 litres in the amount of methanol I added to my 20 litres of oil. 28.8, instead of 144 gms.
Can it be saved and if so how.
Cheers Michael

Re: Save a batch

Mikek,
What he ^ said.

The reprocessing will depend on whether you kept the failed batch sealed, whether you water washed it or whether you tried to recover ahy unused methanol from it.

If you kept it sealed, you should be able to reprocess with the quantities below:
You should have added 144, you added only 28, so add the difference to enough methanol to get it to dissolve and re-process.

Whether you water washed it or recovered the methanol, you will still need a little more caustic, plus the correct amount of methanol. FFA neutralisation should have needed 44g of caustic for 20 litres of oil, so you were short of 16 g in the mix, just to neutralise the FFA, so mabye up to 20 g extra caustic will be needed (116+20=136g).
Dissolve this in the 20% methanol and after ensuring that the oil is dry, reprocess the batch.

Please keep us informed of your progress.

Regards,
Tony
