acrolein

I am interested in burning some crude glycerine from bio production. It would be used in addition with wood in an outside fire place with a 2 metre flu pipe. I have read of other people using glycerine and wood shavings mixed together. My concern is , i have also read that it can make Acrolien gas when burning glycerine.
Would this acrolien gas be burned in the fire before getting into the atmosphere through the flu pipe.
Thanks to anyone that can reply

Re: acrolein

Bridgette,
As the inventor of the sawdust and byproduct in a 1 litre milk carton fire brick and after using it for heating our home for the past 7 winters, I have reasearched this fairly thoroughly.
Acrolien is a flammable gas and, if there is adequate airflow for the fire, will not be emitted from the flue. It will be consumed in the fire.

Restricting the airflow to wood products burned in a fire (slow combustion) will cause the emission of some nasty products in the smoke from that fire. Similarly, slow combustion burning of these fire bricks also releases some nasty combustion products from the wood components, as well as some Acrolien.

I hope this helps ,
Tony

There is a very very old product in Egypt called "glys-nesh" made of glycerine and wood shaving " nesh - stands for Neshara = wood" shavings . This product is over 100 years old if not more.

It used to come in sticks 1" x 1" x 7". Old farmers used to use them in open air fire places ususally in fields. Not sure if it still around.

I thought I came up with something new too until an old man in the family reminded me of this product.

Re: acrolein

I had an idea of instead of trying to block noise to make an area quiet, make the opposite noise to cancel it out.
I was really happy until I found someone else had thought of it 80 years earlier.
So did I not "invent" the idea, or just not invent it first?
Perhaps we are just all clever people here......

Re: acrolein

Perhaps I worded that poorly.
I pioneered the use of biodiesel by-product mixed with sawdust, packed into a 1 Litre milk carton as a fuel in a solid fuel space heater.

Is that better?

Can anyone add anything to my first reply, or is it accepted that my reply, pertaining to Acrolein is valid.

Regards,
Tony

Re: acrolein

Tony, Obviously the above shared info got you upset. Not sure why?

Please note that I also mentioned. I thought I have come up with something new too. I thought I am an inventor too

Inventor or pioneer they are all man made titles that we put next to our names just to feel better.

We have all pioneered in many areas and feel clever.

As Chris said it. We are all clever people here.

If you feel I owe you an apology ... I am sorry Tony.

Re: acrolein

I have no idea who pioneered the idea, but I "borrowed" it from 'Journey to Forever': Glycerine: Journey to Forever a couple of years ago and have been successfully using the concept (using sawdust gained freely from a local sawmill) since then - bloody hot fire! I only need one or two of these cartons per night to quickly warm the whole house. Tony, you obviously have used them for much longer - more power to you.

Re: acrolein

I assume you guys use NaOH and not KOH to get the solid brick?

Re: acrolein

Yes Maverick, I certainly do. I reheat the glycerol mixture prior to making my bricks.
