First batch, maybe a problem?

Hey guys,

I did my first batch the other day, using the Dr Pepper method. Seems to have gone alright, I've got seperation of the bio and glycerine. There's a few globs floating on the top of the glycerine, I imagine that's nothing to worry about?

However I've got a 2-3mm layer of something darker floating on top of the bio? It's probably a little lighter in colour than the glycerine, though it's too thin a layer to really tell. Throw it in with the wash or skim it off and get rid of it?

Was using brand spankers Home Brand blended veg oil if that helps.

No ideas? I did another batch with the same oil, 5 grams of caustic again, cut the methanol down to 200ml and it did it again. I'll try with with new canola oil on the weekend and see if that does it.

The floating layer could be soap. What was your titrration amount. You didn't say.

Re: First batch, maybe a problem?

Didn't titrate it, just went with 5 grams of NaOH being new oil. I'll be grabbing all the stuff for titration on the weekend so I can get stuck into my used oil, I'll do it to this stuff while I'm there.

Would soap be the result of too much or too little NaOH?

The skin on top of the bio is a common thing when using NaOH.

Not a problem. Chuck it in with the wash and it will all come out good.

Cheers, I'll wash it all and see how it comes out.
