Hot water heater. I have a hot water heater and am trying to work out if the 22 liters of oil that will not drain because the lower outlet is 200mm from the bottom. will this become an issue when new oil is added, to the titration results. Or is there a drain on the bottom of the HWS. I can not see one as there is a cover on the bottom. If anyone with experience could help i would appreciate it Daniel

Re: Hot water heater. Daniel, HWS usually have a domed (convex) top and sometimes have a domed (concave) bottom. The sacrificial anode is usually inserted thru a (25mm?) hole in the top. If you invert the HWS, the domed top, becomes a domed bottom. If you use the HWS upside down you can use the Sacrificial Anode hole with a ball valve to allow complete draining of the HWS. If the element is half way up, this will not be a problem, but if it is at the bottom, you may need to heat the oil external to the HWS. Some HWS have 2 elements, one at the top and one at the bottom, to allow the whole lot to heat off-peak, and just heat a little during peak periods. If yours has 2 elements, choose the element which is lower, when the HWS is inverted. I hope this helps, Tony

Re: Hot water heater update The HWS has a dome shaped bottom When i took the cap of it had what I could only describe as barnacles on it. Thanks for your advice Tony And Qwarla. Last edited by Daniel K; 20th August 2008 at 06:56 PM. Reason: pics

Re: Hot water heater. That's the stuff. Don't forget the anode as Tony mentioned. That is in the centre top. Makes a good return hole. If you don't need this, remove the anode rod and plug the hole, as you don't want the zinc in the reactor.
