making a venturi

g'day all im in the middle of making my home made processor, im following Graham Lamings style. GL's Eco-System state diagram

Just wondering if anyone has actually had any experience making these and how well they worked?

Cheers Chris

Re: making a venturi

Hi,
I tried to make a venturi using Graham Lamming's design and the best it would do was lift oil from around 100mm using hot oil through the venturi. I then tried some other designs I found on the internet and even worse results. I then gave up.
If I was to revisit this I would have another go at Grahams design. I'm sure if I had of put more effort into this design I would have had better success.
Cheers, Chris

Re: making a venturi

Jasper,
The suction of a venturi is proportional to the flow through the fluid pipe. Is your pump strong enough for the job?
In some of the photos on his site, it looks like there is a kink in the T piece, just before the venturi pipe connects.
You could also look at having the inserted pipe enter the oil flow slightly to create greater flow at that point, which I believe was the reason for the kink I saw in the photo.

Regards,
Tony

Re: making a venturi

Tony,
I was using a QB80. I think the problem was the angle of the taper and I got the inlet port in the wrong place. This was mainly because of the hand beating of the copper. On a second attempt I think I would try using hard drawn copper with just a small section in the middle softened. Also having some sort of roller system would make it easier to get right. It is quite time consuming and frustrating as part of me just wanted to hit it harder to get it to the correct shape quicker.
I plan on having another go one day.
Cheers, Chris

Re: making a venturi

thats for the info, im looking at making the design where he fills a t piece up with solder then drills the holes.
it wouldnt have to suck too hard as the methoxide will be in hight place, probably level with the venturi.
Cheers CHris

TroyH is quite new in here.
Re: making a venturi

I didn't notice anywhere on the solder design, and attempt to remove the sharp corners. If you want to improve the design, that would be a good place to start. The sharp corners will produce turbulence, which will affect how the venturi functions.

As Tony said, the pressure drop (that is between the normal flow in the pipe, and in the neck of the venturi) is proportional to the velocity difference, which is proportional to the reduction in area across the venturi.

That said, there is a limit to how fast you can push a fluid through a pipe, thus there is a limit to how much you can reduce the area.

This page may be of some inspirational value: Venturi, eductor, ejector, solids conveying, vacuum system
