Thumbs down Poor Conversion

Hi again, i just did a 60 litre batch and after the conversion rate test (brilliant) got the bad news that it was not a particlarly good conversion, now, as i am 99% sure that i used enough KOH (this time), i was wondering what other factors could contribute to the poor conversion.. and what should i do with it now? is it still usable, or should i reprocess it?
i am champion at making 1 litre batches,..hah.. they turn out really well, mabey i should make lots and lots of them eh?
thanks

Re: Poor Conversion

Hello Eddie,

Poor conversion can be caused by,

Not enough NaOH/KOH
Poor quality NaOH/KOH
Not enough methanol
Poor quality methanol
Not enough time mixing for the temperature the reaction is performed at..
Poor quality mixing equipment.
Too much water in the reaction.

Tilly

Re: Poor Conversion

ok thanks tilly, the fact that my one litre batches work well leads me to think its prolly the reactor, or not enough mixing perhaps. i will modify a few bits and try again.. and again.. hah.
