I have beem making biodiesel for awhile now using KOH / Methonal for the catylast, and have a few hundred litres of by product "glycerine" black glug.

Question: How can I turn this into fertiliser, is this possible and is it practial.

cheers 05

Read this:

http://www.biofuelsforum.com/making_...glycerine.html

The thread's about acidifying glycerine with phosphoric acid, to partially refine the glycerine, separate out the FFA's and make potassium phosphate (the fertilizer bit).

Phosphoric acid is quite expensive and the proportion of potassium phosphate produced is small. It's a fair bit of work and expense, so I'll leave you to work out the economics. But if you are doing it on a large scale it might be viable.

By the way, you can use the resulting FFA's to make biodiesel in the acid/base process and the semi-refined glycerine might have an increased value (in bulk qty's).

we mix 20 litres of waste glycerol to 1000 litres of water and spray one hectare we havnt had the soil tested yet but the grass is much greenner thicker and the cattle seem to go to the test areas every time we put them in these two paddocks im now going to rig up a filter and start spraying through a boomspray to spread it all over the property

What are you using to make the biodiesel Sean? NAOH or KOH.

Hi Sean

Very interesting. Do you remove any of the Methonal from the waste Glycerol before using it as a fertiliser and putting it through your sprayer ?

Re: Fertiliser from By Product

I was very close to asking this same Q last night

the biggest Q I have is will it hurt my paddocks?

I was just going to mix up 60lt glycerol (KOH) with 1000lt water and run it over the paddocks, I have very poor coastal soil

Technically illegal without a lot of paper work in NSW but it would have to be better than some of the other options of disposal

thanks Sean for the testing

anyone else doing this without all the hassle of acids etc?

cheers Murf
