Re: Hydrogen generator trial results

Hi All,
Just been catching up on old threads and this one has amazed me.
Sandmans input about using urine seems to be a very good way to obtain hydrogen with little energy input. The thought of using urinedoesnt t hrill me.
Questions:
Does the nickel degrade over time and need replacing as I would expect it to be quite expencive and hard to find?

Is there a better base product(rather than urine) that could be used?

To build a hydrogen cell does it matter about the distance between the electrodes?
Can you store the gas safely in a car if it was produced at home?
Cheers
Maxwell

Re: Hydrogen generator trial results

I would not store a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, or indeed pure hydrogen, in a vehicle. If you were to do this, then on-the-fly production would be the safest and easiest method.

Sodium Hydroxide or potassium hydroxide are suitable electrolytes. Alternatively you could use dilute sulfuric acid.

The nickel should last quite a long time.

TravisL1 is infamous around these parts
Thumbs up Re: Hydrogen generator trial results

I have a 1995 Dodge van 3/4 ton and have tried this Browns gas thingy,,,,,,,well I traveled 140 miles ( since im from the U.S.) and only used 1 gallon of fuel. Not bad since before I was getting only 17 miles per gallon.

Hi TravisL1, That sounds great !! I believe that these sorts or results are coming from the new generators on the market at the moment. Did you build it your self or is it a off the shelf product?
Is your Dodge a gas engine or Diesel and what size is it?
I have one ordered for my F350 7.3L diesel and should be here in a few days I hope to do some dyno testing and emission testing on the F350 once it is installed.

Cheers
Sandman.

Re: Hydrogen generator trial results

TravisL1 - I don't believe you.

2.3L/100km is about half the fuel consumption of the most advanced diesel hatchbacks on the market. And your van probably weighs twice what they do.

Thats a bit harse, and maybe a little unfounded. I know of a guy who runs A 2H in a Landcruiser, thats says that when he turns on his hydrogen cell he can cruise on the highway at idol.

SO that means he doesn't need to press the accelerator and he cruises at 110-120.

That would surely dramatically reduce the fuel consumption.

It should also be mentioned that he runs a specially REBUILT engine as the hydrogen ruined his first one. He had it rebuilt with steel pistons and stainless valves. He said the pistons where pitted and blown right through and the valves where burned and didn't seat properly.

Re: Hydrogen generator trial results

That's amazing Joe.

How long can he keep doing this before he has to stop and recharge the cell?

How long does it take to recharge the cell?

What happenes when he needs to slow down below these speeds such as when approaching another vehicle or a bendy part of the road?

I have been told that using a caustic soda electrolyte or potassium hydroxide or sulphuric acid will cause acidic fumes to corrode aluminium engine parts. A lower yielding hydrogen electrolyte has been found that is both environmentally friendly and cheap. White vinegar. This does not produce chromium or caustic gases. However hydrogen yield will be reduced. This can be over come by ramping up the amps to a point that is just below boiling the electrolyte in the cell. In a 12v system a dc converter from 12v to 24v will work however in the home made generators this will be a trial and error determination to find the best output of hydrogen with amperage input. (Effectively you will be looking to double the 12v and amps in via the 24v dc converter).
I suspect that your mate will find that his steel pistons will also corrode over time if he does not change the type of electrolyte.

Cheers
Sandman.

Has or is anyone using a water/alcohol injection with a hydrogen generator on their diesel?
Would love to know the out come.
