    Thanks Tony.

what I saw on Guntree today is an 8Kva or standard 5Kva Diesel Gen set for $1400.00
DIESEL GENERATOR SILENCED 8 KVA 3 PHASE SINGLE PHASE | Miscellaneous Goods | Gumtree Australia Byron Area - Byron Bay

The sales doc states it is approved for Diesel , BioDiesel or plant based fuels.
"The Genpower GD Series is on of the only generators certified to run on diesel, bio-diesel and accept blended natural plant based fuels* - This amazing technology allows you to produce exactly the same power outputs as conventional gensets, but with almost 85% less harmful emissions, a huge advance for green power"

Sounds good. Wish I had a need for one.

The generator sounds like the same as mine. Works well expect each single phase has a 7amp breaker! Not good when you run your 15amp heater!

Looks good in the photos, best to have a Mercedes specialist give it a Pre-Purchase Inspection so that there are no surprises once you own it.

My wife has one similar to that, hers is a Champagne 1986 300D without ABS. Good fuel mileage, but lacking acceleration off the mark unless you keep the accelerator to the floor (Kick down switch operated).

Let us know if you buy it.

            Regards,
            Tony

Re: What I saw on Gumtree

Thanks Tony. I do like the idea of cruising around slowly in a nice old Merc, contributing comparatively little to greenhouse emissions, but I think a ute will serve me better practically. I am definitely going to look at the Merc if I can ever catch the current owner at a time that is convenient for him to show it. He's obviously in no rush to move it on.

How do you find yours for replacement parts, generally? Easy to find? Expensive? Say a set of brake pads, oil filter.... reco auto gearbox? The first thing that comes to mind when Mercs, BMWs etc are mentioned is expensive parts and, if really unlucky, labour.

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.

              Regards,

              Ethan

                3DB,
Service consumables are generally cheaper than Ford, Holden Toyota, etc
I have always been able to source OEM parts for our vehicles from a variety of specialist Euro vehicle parts suppliers, including MB Spares in Canberra and a choice of National Automotive parts companies with local branches.
If you do purchase a Mercedes vehicle, sign up on the OZBENZ.net forum, where you can easily obtain advice on the peculiarities of your vehicle and call on the experience of long term owners. As with all forums, it is best to search for your issue, before asking for help. This ensures that your better informed questions are likely to be answered in good humour and are likely to challenge the respondents.

Transmission repairs are usually expensive, regardless of the make of vehicle. Often it is cheaper in the long term to bite the bullet and pay for the repairs, at least then you know that the transmission is in good condition. Installing a "good used transmission" may be a good short term solution, but it may give very short, or long service - it is an unknown.
