    Detroit Diesel Gen Set

    Can anyone tell me about this very awesome Detroit Diesel I saw today? It is coupled to a big AC generator. I didn’t have time to have a good look, but quickly snapped this photo. Seems to have two turbos feeding two roots-style superchargers and a big intercooler round the back. I reckon it would sound like the world was coming to an end when fired up.

    Is it one of the 2-stroke ones?

    Certainly capable of some serious power. Most likely a 2 stroke, but who knows?
    Have you tried googling the photo?

          Yeah I had a look around for it, but couldn't find it. Didn't have much time....was there to look at other stuff and my host was in a rush. As you say, the engine code would have revealed heaps. I did have quick look on Wikipedia and I think it is a 149 series, which apparently came in V-configurations up to 20 cylinders. Seems like the base V8 model has the same bore and stroke (i.e. 149 cubic inches per cylinder) and they just add more cylinders, plus supercharger, plus turbo, plus intercooling. The latest variant was making 102.5 kW per cylinder, so the V20 would be 48.8L, 2,050 kW and 11,000 Nm!

          I recall from my petrol-head days that the original American hot roders adapted their blowers from the Detroit Diesel 71-series engines. So when you see a Weiand 8-71 supercharger, it's original incarnation was designed for a diesel V8 of 8x71 ci = 568 ci.

            I don't think I'd like to be the one paying the fuel bill when they are running at full load.
