  • Ssangyong Rexton 2005 problem issue dead

I've killed my beloved 2005 Rexton.
I have obviously made a bad batch of biodiesel and the Rexton didn't like it. It initially started running rough - losing power - now wont start.
I've had the glow plugs changed, the injectors changed, filters changed and fuel system flushed. She will turn over no dramas, and if I spray some sort of engine start/ether into the intake she'll fire up until I stop spraying. The system had a varnish like fuel in it.
I'm thinking it might be the High Pre$$ure pump?. Totally lost as to what to do other than change the engine - ouch!
I'm based on the Sunshine Coast - an hour north of Brisbane, QLD. Know of any fuel specialists in the area?

Check for air in your fuel line first.

Is it common rail? When you say it started running rough; over what sort of period - days- weeks - months? Can you check for fuel flow at an injector? It only needs two things to run - fuel and compression. If it starts on aerostart it is either not getting fuel or it has insufficient compression to combust the fuel. When you crank it over does it blow any smoke from the exhaust?

Dont be too quick to blame the bio, lots of people who dont run bio also have their vehicles break down. you need to find someone who has or buy an OBD code scanner. this pugs into the engine management system and will, tell you if a sensor has died. They are not that expensive any more heres on for $145 MaxiScan MS509 OBD2 Scanner Code Reader Live Data | eBay
Also dont be too concerned about vanish in the fuel system, it has most likely come from years of dino diesel, and every other rexton of that age will likely have the same amount of crap in the fuel tank and lines.
Im not familiar with the rexton fuel system but I suspect that it has an electric lift pump in the tank. These pump should come on for a few seconds when you turn on the key, and when the engine is running and look much like the petrol fuel in take pumps found on almost every modern fuel injected car. Can you here a buzz in the fuel tank when you turn on the key? sometimes you can bash the bottom of the fuel tank and the pump will start working again if it is worn out or has crap in it.

It sounds like fuel starvation. As its difficult to see if you have air in the fuel line when the engine wont run at all, you need to remove the possibility all together. Try gettign a really clean plastic drink bottle and cutting the bottom off it. rig it up so you can put a length of fuel hose from the nozzle of the drink bottle directly to the fuel pump inlet. bypass all filters and hoses. hold it up in the air, fill the bottle with CLEAN fuel (bio or otherwise, it wont matter) and give the hose a bit of a tap and light shake to make sure you have no air in the hose.

now get someone to try to start the car in the normal manner. it might take a few cranks to fire as the pump might be empty, but if the problem is with fuel lines, fliters or pusher pumps, this will bypass the lot. It will also prove yuour pump is ok (if it is).

Dont know a lot about your particlar pump, but most pumps have an inlet screen in the that may have blocked for some reason.

its worth a look before you go spending big money. The first thing a mechanic will tell you is you have destroyed your ip using Bio. you wont convince him otherwise.

If you do get the engine to run, try replacing the fuel hoses with clear plastic hose from bunnings which will show you if you have any air leaks, and where they are.

I spent an enormous amount of heartache chasing leaks over the years, and finally bit the bullet and installed a walbro 10psi pusher pump near the tank.

          Good luck.

Cade that wouldn't be a good idea on a common rail, injection system, as the injectors and pump are very sensitive to any sort of dirt, and some have an intake pump that pressurizes the fuel to 80 psi before it get to the main injector pump. its this "low pressure" pump is the one that i would check first. have a look at Diesel Common Rail Injection Facts 2 - YouTube

yes it is common rail, It has a low pressure pump and a high pressure pump, From memory the pressures in the fuel manifold can get as high as 35,000PSI. It started running rough and taking longer and longer to start over a period of about a week. Until the final day when she would only turn over but not fire. I'll ask the mechanic about the smoke. Its currently at Cullen & Sons in Nambour (peugot and Ssangyong dealers). It was also at diesel power systems for a period, but it stumped them. Does that give you a better idea as to what the problem maybe? Do you know a friendly Bio mechanic or a specialist fuel mechanic on the Sunny coast.

Thanks smithw - would this scanner be the same that the workshop has. The 'check engine' light on the dashboard did come on and I had it put on a engine scanner' then - it came back with so many codes they didnt know where to start. Its common rail, It has a low pressure pump and a high pressure pump-35,000PSI. It started running rough and taking longer and longer to start over a period of about a week. Not sure I recall hearing a buzz from a fuel pump. Do you know a friendly Bio mechanic or a specialist fuel mechanic on the Sunny coast?

Thanks Cade - Do you think that would work considering the fuel manifold pressure is 35k psi - very high. Forgot to say to smithw that I do have the manual - its very good and tells me where everything is, just not sure where to go after changing the fuel, fuel filter, injectors, glow plugs - I'm guessing pumps? Do you know a friendly Bio mechanic or a specialist fuel mechanic on the Sunny coast.

Re: Ssangyong Rexton 2005 problem issue dead

Well its not 35k psi in the rubber fuel hose before the pump, so as long as everything is ultra clean like smithw says, it will rule out issues with fuel supply to the pump. Given that you had all those error codes, i dont think thats your issue. Sounds like its some electrical / computer issue? Not sure why air in the fuel line would give error codes.

Not a lot of help, sorry.

                        hi biofrustrated
The scanner would be the same as the mechanics. first thing I would do is locate the low pressure pump and insure that it is working. It should have power to it when cranking. and yes it should buzz if it is working. if that is ok next put a pressure gauge on the low pressure fuel line and make sure you have fuel pressure when cranking. not sure on what the pressure should be for your vehicle but check the manual I would expect at least 60psi.
If every thing checks out reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes, then plug the scanner back in, (some vehicles the ecu has to be reset with the scanner), This will clear all the error codes, and crank it over. hopefully you will only get one or two codes and that will be much easier to track down the fault.
The electric fuel pumps on petrol injected vehicles is one of the most common faults there is, as they run all the time in the bottom of the fuel tank, picking up all the dirt, water and other crap at the bottom of the tank, I see no reason the a diesel vehicle wouldn't have the same issues with these pumps as they are almost identical in construction and function.

Re: Ssangyong Rexton 2005 problem issue dead

Gday,The symptoms you are describing about your car are very similar to the problems i had with a pug 406.I replaced the high pressure pump 3 times. The first and second time the pump went i used 2nd hand pumps that were $400 each plus labour to install. The third time i spent a afternoon ringing up diesel places trying to buy a O ring kit for a bosch pump as i now had 2 sitting in the shed. The diesel repair industry is a closed shop and i was told unless you have a account we cant sell a kit to you even though i had a credit card.I ended up seeing my local diesel shop even though he does not touch high pressure pumps because he hasn't the necessary test gear. He got me a O ring kit within 3 days for $25.00.
The problem with 100% home made bio and high pressure pumps in my experiece is that the plungers/pistons in pump end up sticking when the motor is stopped and the spring is not strong enough to push the plunger/piston back down onto the cam.The plunger builds up with a varnish like film because of heat and pressure. It also known as polymerisation. So when you try and start your car the plungers/pistons are doing nothing because the cam is not moving them to pressurize the fuel.I ended up buying a torx socket set and pulled the pump apart and installed the O ring kit.I cleaned up the plungers with petrol and you could notice the difference on how well the plunger moved once the varnish was removed.
Repairing the pump myself was a success and proved to me that the diesel repair industry uses scare tactics to stop people repairing pumps themselves.Hope this post is helpfull because what i have learnt has been painfull and expensive.regards Westwinds

Thanks westwinds that is good to know. is there any thing special about the o rings? could you take the old ones to a bearing shop and get them matched up? might be the way to go if the diesel shop wont supply the parts.
just looked on ebay, guess what, you can get the kit from the uk $35 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal...item256f00a926
