    Re: The Imsides method

What a good idea it was for me to post on here. At least when Tilly is examining my posts and 'having a go' it gives other members like Dr Mark a rest from him.

    Re: The Imsides method

Wesley, you have to use ex-process glycerol to make the proceedure work. It depends on a number of factors; ratio of mix, residual chemical amounts tied up in the glycerol, acid value of the oil and...

    Re: The Imsides method

It is ridiculous to call a glycerol pre-wash a !st stage. That would imply that only methoxide was added.

Jon Heron seemed to be annoyed that I managed to convert oil to bio by using only...

    Re: The Imsides method

Tilly, I know there is no Magic, but when the glycerol pre-treatment is so easy to do, why would I want to try to convert WVO 'as is' When I can remove ffa's and water so easily, making the oil...

    Re: The Imsides method

I think your conclusions are generally correct Tilly. However I did perform some water tests on KOH methoxide before and after being dried by CaO some time ago. I can't remember offhand which forum I...

BTW well done with the tests. When you threw down the gauntlet to Dr Mark it was a mistake for him to claim that you would get separation on the...

    Re: The Imsides method

That isn't what i said, Tilly. I was agreeing with you that calcium hydride can dry methanol, the very reason it works in the Sandy Brae, producing Hydrogen. I didn't mention anything about Calciom...

    Re: The Imsides method

Indeed it does Tilly, which is why the Sandy Brae works to quantify the amount of water in methanol.

Calcium Oxide also reduces the water in methoxide, I did a few water tests before and after...

    Re: The Imsides method

Apple sauce is probably due to the water liberated from neutralisation. As there is insufficient catalyst for any transesterification to proceed the water will be held in suspension instead of being...

    Re: The Imsides method

Wesley, I think you are getting mixed up with two quite separate reactions here. After the CaO has done its job removing water from the reaction it takes no further part in the neutralisation...
  14. Re: My Ambient/ Room temperature Biodiesel Production

Hi Mark, i have (partly) used your method in that i have used CaO to dry the methoxide, then used a 2 stage method at ambient temperature. It does work. However, surely there has to be a relationship...
  15. Re: My Ambient/ Room temperature Biodiesel Production

I also bet that you are correct Tilly. Even with anhydrous methoxide there is no way the reaction will get anywhere near completion with that recipe.
  16. Re: My Ambient/ Room temperature Biodiesel Production

Better to try oil that titrates at 7(KOH) if you are adding 15gmsKOH/litre, then you may get somewhere!

Cade, there is a rough way to estimate the methanol left in your bio.

    Re: washing with heat

Hi cade, to water wash you must convert all the triglycerides (oil) as these will/can emulsify during the wash and cause you problems, so the first thing is to confirm a clear dropout test.

    There...

  25. Re: My Ambient/ Room temperature Biodiesel Production

Presumably Tilly the process you did at 4degsC (based on the rule of thumb you always mention) took in excess of 24 hours mixing to convert it.
