    The Merc with the Bosch inline pump with the mechanical lift pump hanging off the side of it is very forgiving, unlike the Jackaroo with the rotary / VE pump.

    I used to have a Mercedes 300D. When I bought it, it was noisy as anything. Previous owner had advanced the timing to compensate for a cylinder being down...

    Tony, I believe by lift pump, he means just that - the lift pump (on the side of the injection pump)... not the actual IP (Injection Pump).
