Drying Oil

Just made my first setup for drying oil after a first fine filter. Sorry no pictures.

240lt platic drum
pedestal fan
watering can head
some irrigation fittings from bunnings
small water pump (bilge ? type)
clear aquarium hose
one frame of old school chair
300watt aquarium heater
my wifes brain power

Combine all of the above. The heater raises temp to max of 34degC. The pump lifts the oil up to spray oil down on the top of oil in drum. Fan blows across the oil to dry it. The chair (temporary) is the support for the spray head. The fittings just squeesed together tight without any adhesives at this stage.

The idea came mainly from Fitian, reading the upflow filter thread by David and a couple of brainstorms from my brilliant wife. I just tested the oil after 2hrs and it is dry. Unfortunately I did not post test the oil. I'm assuming the recent problems with my cruiser were water related. I found droplets of water in the bottom of one of my final filter drums.

Cheers Peter<><

Re: Drying Oil

Excellent Peter! Well done Peter's wife.
I am hoping photo's will follow soon.
I have a spare pedestal fan and a pump and hose. Might even have an aquarium heater and a watering can head. Anyone know where I can get a 240 litre plastic drum? Also those 1000 litre IBCs that David has mentioned.
I have 1st stage filtered 15 litres of oil so far and hope to set up to do more ist stage and some 2nd stage filtering tomorrow. Drying will have to wait till February after holidays. I am hoping to copy Peter's setup.

Re: Drying Oil

Sorry false alarm, hot pan not hot enough, did test again with hotter pan and then crackle.

Still drying and still trying.

Re: Drying Oil

OK update, The last sample tested at 3.5 hrs done twice with a smoking hot pan. Result is no water present. I'll now do a final 5micron filter before it goes in the tank.

98troopy

I bought the plastic drums at Hunter Rural in Heatherbrae near Raymond Terrace approx $45 each, I think they still have some. Otherwise try the rural produce store at Morisset.

Re: Drying Oil

I can get plastic drums from the local laundry for $20 each.
Approach your laundry and ask them what they get their chemicals in?

If I want any I first see if they have any there then I have to ring the Rep of the chemical company they deal through and arrange a time to meet him on site. The money goes to his Christmas fund. It saves them the cost of returning the empty drum.
