Cold Filtered oil when not so cold

Guys,

I started collecting oil last winter and cold filtered it all then and stored it in a 1000 litre IBC - all good - it has had about 6 months to settle and that is what i have been using during this summer.

My concern comes with the oil that i am collecting an filtering now - this is slowly filling my next IBC - currently at about 700 litres - but i do not want to use this until it has settled for a much longer period.

When i get back to the cold months - will the HMPs that have gotten through during this warm weather just sink to the bottom of the tank and sit there (thermal movement issues removed from the picture) or will these remain in suspension and give me grief in my onboard filters etc ?

Up until now i have not been filtering before adding the oil from storage (already filtered to 1 micron) into the car, but i guess this is something that i may have to contemplate when the colder weather returns ?

Craig

Re: Cold Filtered oil when not so cold

Generally the fat will appear in the oil as the temp. drops.

The amount and type of fat will determine how much solidifies and from my experience the majority will settle to the bottom.

If the fats appear as a haze or perhaps even larger agglomerations this should not necessarily be an issue if your system can handle moving it around as the HE in the system will soon melt them.

Some of the oil I have been getting lately has a very high fat content that seems to solidify at about 20 deg C and this goes through the system quite well.

I would not be overally concerned, particularly if you use the oil off the top of the IBC and try to avoid the fat layer (if you actually get a fat layer.

Cold filter in winter is different from cold filter in summer :-)

Re: Cold Filtered oil when not so cold

Hi craigcurtin,

I store my filtered wvo in 20 litre plastic drums that ricebran oil comes in.

I always put the date on the drum caps so I know when the wvo came out of the filter system.

Last winter I was still using wvo that was filtered the previous summer. This wvo was clear but was flecked with small particles of HMP [High Melt Point] fats.

The lumps did not cause any probs in my case as they still poured fine and burned like any other wvo in the troopy.

This was my experience but your bulk storage IBC's may be different. If any HMP wvo settles on the bottom over winter then it will be there ready to use the summer after.
