HJ61 intank filter screen

Hi,
Would anyone how to remove the in tank filter screen for a Landcruiser HJ61 TD. I have removed the fuel sender which only leaves about a 40mm hole. Looks like I will have to remove the tank and clean it out anyway.

I saw a thread a couple of years ago but I can't find it now, may have been lost in the meltdown. I think the thread was by Tim-HJ61, I believe Tim is away at the moment.

Background: Blocked 3 Super Cheap $2.99 filters in 3 weeks which was unusual, 100% BD since June 2007, bubbled dried only, started water washing November 2008.
Thanks
John H

Re: HJ61 intank filter screen

Hi all,
I will answer my own post. Today I removed the tank and in the drivers side front corner the fuel pick up and return lines enter through another access hole take out the screws and the pick up screen is on the end of it.

It would have been good if there was another access hole in the rear cargo area same as the fuel sender one.

I tried to clean out the tank with the karcher got alot out but nothing I have will dissolve the brown stuff. I left the tank in the sun this afternoon and some it (black stuff) started to run down to the access hole.

Does anyone know what will dissolve this stuff?

Regards
John H

Re: HJ61 intank filter screen

Thanks Johnnojack for the links,
I had the tank steamed cleaned but even that did not get all the sticky stuff out. The tank is back in now and if the problem returns, I will pull it out again and try caustic.
It will only take me an hour to take the tank out now I have done it once.
Regards
John H
