Query from WA regarding KOH

Hi WA folks;

I have been sent a query regarding KOH,. Please direct your queries to Graeme;

Joe

I have heaps of potassium hydroxide left over from a project that we no longer have a requirement for. I know it is used in Biodiesel production. Would you know of anyone who would be interested in approx 3000 litres or so?

Regards
Graeme Gordon

Thanks for the reply. It is in litres. It was used for an AUV project in the NW of WA for the batteries of the AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and could not be shipped back to Norway.

Hi Graeme,

thanks for your enquiry.

Boy thats a lot of KOH. What was it used for? Its curious that you say 3000 litres. Would it not be kilo's.

I will pass your enquiry along to the WARFA association. They are based in WA and may have enough members to consume it all.

Regards

Joe

TroyH is quite new in here.
Re: Query from WA regarding KOH

It sounds as if it is a solution.

There are people who believe that a concentrated solution of KOH is fine for use in bio manufacture.

Alternatively one could set up an evaporating pan of sorts, and dry it out in the sun (could be some issues with CO2 absorption forming carbonate).

3000L is still a lot of KOH tho!

Might suit a soap manufacturer?

Re: Query from WA regarding KOH

Last offer guys. Graeme writes...

Joe
This fluid will be available in the next week after Christmas depending
on delivery from our job site. We will be disposing of it almost
immediately once it arrives as it is no further use to us.

If someone in you group would like to have the product and distil it
they will need to decide fairly soon and we could deliver it direct to
them at no charge for transport or product.

Re: Query from WA regarding KOH

Joe,
I spoke with Graeme this morning and while the offer is good, the concentration of the KOH (at 31"% IIRC) is not good for Biodiesel production. It would cause excessive soap production. Concentrating the KOH would be difficult, and in a home environment quite hazardous.
I feel that it would not be of use to WARFA members.

While any forum members are free to contact Graham to take up his offer, I feel that it may be better suited to soap making.

I have suggested that Graeme contact one of the soap making groups in Australia to see if they can use it.

Thanks Joe for bring this to the Forum.

Merry Christmas,
Tony
