  • small quantity of KOH - anyone want to share

HI there - as topic suggests -- i would like a small quantity of KOH - i have a large bag of Caustic soda - but my base oil is animal fat / lard - and all i am getting from my biodiesel is a LOT of soap and very little biodiesel - someone has suggested that KOH is better and produces less soap (end product gives me about 4 litres of bio from 16 litres - so currently not worth the effort )

so i am just looking for maybe 1 kg for making a few small batches - can anyone help ?

I am in the hoxton park area ( west of liverpool )

    thanks

    Boc

Reacting with KOH or NAOH should not make any difference to the amount of soap created.

What does make a difference are:
      • Water in the reaction - This is THE cause of excessive soap production.
      • Free Fatty Acids - These need to be neutralised to allow the catalyst portion of the caustic to enhance the speed of reaction.

If your oil titrates above 10 using NaOH or 14 using KOH, I recommend that you use a 2 stage process, with an Acid reaction to esterify the FFA (into biodiesel) and to reduce soap creation during the Base reaction transesterifying the oil into biodiesel.

Tallow with 10% FFA produces as much soap as Canola with 10% FFA.
      Are you titrating the oil?
What is your titration amount of NaOH?

You should research drying your oil, and incorporate a drying step before reaction. You may also wish to search for tests to determine water content.
You might like to start at this website: Welcome - Collaborative Biodiesel Tutorial Website
Search Keywords : "Drying washed biodiesel" (same process can be used to dry WVO) and "testing for water"
