View Full Version : Methanol in Newcastle

26th March 2006, 06:16 PM
I bought methanol from Hodges Petroleum at Cardiff (ph 49547177) yesterday. They have 200litre drums @ $214 or for smaller quantities in your drum $2.42/litre. They had plenty of stock and very helpful.I had been looking under fuel suppliers but they told me methanol is classed as a solvent. So look under SOLVENTS in the yellow pages.

Thanks for the info bj4408. I'm in Newcastle and am just looking at getting myself ready for some BD production.

What are you using as your oil source? Also, where are you getting your NaOH (or KOH) from?

Great forum guys.

I use canola or cottonseed oil from local shops.
I bought NaOH(drain cleaner) from the supermarket when I did my test batches and first large batches and now use KOH.
I changed because I don't always have time to drain off the glycerine from NaOH while it is still warm and it then sets in my processor, which is a a pain to warm up and melt again.
Not being near a large town/city I have bought KOH from Escential Oils by mail order, not the cheapest but easy and quick when you first start.

Have since bought KOH from :
Custom Chemicals
Tomago Rd
ph. 49648241
$90/25kg bag
They will only sell to you if you have an ABN.
Not cheap by what other people have posted elsewhere but the best I could find in the Hunter area.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum but am hoping to make worthwhile contributions along the way.

In the meantime I have been looking into sources for Methanol (I'm on the Central Coast NSW), and have just gotten a price from a racing contact which will be a reliable source.

He is quoting me $220+gst on 205ltr drums and if I buy on a regular basis then he is prepared to lower the price.

If anyone is interested, let me know.

BTW, being a "newbie" this might be a dumb question but since ethanol can also be used and is easier to make at home, why do many prefer the methanol option?

Cheers, Pete'

You wanted to know if you could get KOH cheaper.

I can buy it for $77 including gst here in Gosford when buying in multiple 25kg bags. Purity is 90%.

My first post but have read these forums for a while now, great information from many of you. Hodges as of 05-05-08 for a 200 ltr drum of methanol was $297.00 sorry for the bad news and they said the next time i get some the price will likely be $330 - $350 a drum. Will post again if i can find a replacement supplier with a better price :(

16th May 2008, 06:44 PM
Yep, I was there today 16/5/08 a bit of a shock, $297. Has it gone up elsewhere?
I must say I was expecting a rise in January but they hadn't changed the price, so maybe its just catching up in one big jump.

The guy I get mine from up here told me the drum I have coming next week is the same price it was last time which was $240, will have to see if there is a change in price...

21st May 2008, 06:54 PM
Picking a drum up from my supplier tomorrow, same price as it was 6 months ago $240... Sounds like Hodge Petroleum is getting a bit greedy with their pricing...

Hi Akaiza,
Where are you getting supplied from or is it to far out of Newcastle.
Good to hear others can get a good price still and I have been thinking of late if Hodge isn't getting a bit gready.

22nd May 2008, 03:10 PM
It is coming from a supplier in Armidale as far as I know, so ya a tad far from Newcastle. Although I was told that they have no dramas in getting it. I normally have to wait for a single drum (Cause they need to sell a full pallet before they deliver), but they reckon they can have a pallet of it for me within a week.

23rd May 2008, 03:42 PM
Man if they delivered to Newcastle for that price i'd buy a pallet no problem lol, Oh well will just have to keep my ear to the ground and find a cheaper supplier.

30th May 2008, 06:18 PM
Something must be wrong at Hodge's today the price was $317.00 for 200 ltrs.Still trying to find additional sources to buy from.If anyone knows anybody in Newcastle that can do a better price could they post please.

I was at Lowes Petroleum in Cardiff last week and I got quoted:

$55 for 20L
$360 for 205L

Anyone know where I can get it cheaper in the Newcastle area???

15th August 2008, 10:13 AM
No but for that price it would be worth making the trip to Whiteys to pick up a couple of drums - $225 each.

15th August 2008, 02:39 PM
Yep i paid the $360.00 the last time i was there.I might have to find out where Whiteys are and go for a drive.

9th November 2008, 08:46 AM
No but for that price it would be worth making the trip to Whiteys to pick up a couple of drums - $225 each.

I did just that and bought two. Next time I go I can pick up some for others in the Newcastle area(I own a small truck) for a small delivery fee ($40-$50 maybe depending on how many).

I'll probably be going down again in Jan 09 if anyone's interested PM me.

23rd January 2009, 06:27 PM
Price at Lowes on 19/1/09 was $327 so it has come down a bit.

I bought this methanol and have since made 2 batches and have had no problems. It is a lot cheaper.
Saudi Arabia RAW METHANOL - 200 LTS - Pickup Only - eBay Other Performance Parts, Performance Parts, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 17-Nov-09 18:10:26 AEDST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290366825941&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT)

They also have a retail outlet
E T Racing Fuels (http://www.etracingfuels.com/)

I ended up buying 4 drums of this Saudi Arabian (98%)methanol and they delivered it to my frieght companies Sydney depot for me for free. The service was very good.
I have saved about $100 a drum compared to what I had to pay in Newcastle and I had it delivered to my door.

I will be buying from them again.

I see they don't currently have any listed on ebay, try giving them a call.
