View Full Version : Blending WVO with Biodiesel

For the last few years I have been blending 30% WVO with 70% low conversion biodiesel to use in my Musso during the summer.
This runs the same as 100% biodiesel.

Last week I decide to do a bit of testing and upped the ratio first to 40% WVO, 60% biodiesel and then to 50- 50.
In both cases, once the glow plug light goes off the car started immediately when cold and there is no noticeable difference in the running of the engine compared to 100% biodiesel.

I think I will have to see just how little biodiesel can be used and the engine still starts immediately from cold.

Tilly, I look forward to reading your test results.

Quick update,

I increased the mixture to 60% WVO and 40% biodiesel.

The engine now takes longer to start on the initial cold start in the morning.
Normally, with 100% biodiesel, once the glow plug light goes off the engine will start virtually instantaneously on the first cold start in the morning and is ready to move off withing 5 seconds or so.
With 60% WVO it cranks perhaps one or two seconds before firing and then takes a further few seconds to settle down to smooth idle and is ready to move off within 15 seconds or so.

Mussos are not happy starters, whether warm or cold without waiting for the glowplug light to go off.

Any time I restart the engine for the rest of the day it does not behave any differently than it does using 100% biodidiesel

Tilly, Are you planning to test higher WVO blends?
At least in Summer....

Hi Tony,

Tilly, Are you planning to test higher WVO blends?
At least in Summer....I am going to leave it at 60% WVO at the moment.
I am off to Wagga Wagga soon so this is good enough for now.
I want to see how the inline filter holds up.

Curious, where do you get your wire mesh washable inline filters?

I might do some further testing after Christmas

Hi, Tilly, have you advanced the injection timing on your Musso? I would think it would help with the cold start, as well as give you a performance bost.

Tilly, I use a prefilter specified for a Mercedes W123 300D. It is a Mann WK31/5 It has a 90 elbow built into it. They usually cost less the $10 each and can be back flushed, washed out using byproduct from biodiesel making, or cleaned using a solvent (ULP).

I too am finding it hard to find the filters available at a lower price.
I will spend a bit more time looking over the next few days
