  • Argentina's to make 2.5m tonne/year biofuels in 2009

(automatically updated/inserted from The Big Biofuels Blog)

Argentina’s will make 2.5m tonnes biofuel/year in 2009 from 50,000 tonnes/year in 2006 as a string of projects come online, says Martin Alvarez, a director for the Camara Argentina de Empresas de Productos y Servicios relacionados al Biodiesel y Afines (CAEBA) in a report by Ivan Castano on ICIS.com and the government is expected to introduce a fuel blendingobligation in the first half of 2007. This could make it a legal requirement for the transport fuel pool to contain 5% biofuel by 2010.
Alvarez says there are 10 bio-energy (mostly biodiesel) projects underway in Argentina, scheduled to come on stream in 2009. They include joint ventures between edible oil firms and petrol companies such as Bunge, Monsanto, Repsol-YPF and Petrobras, Alvarez said.
    Alvarez said.:
"The Argentine government wants to promote biofuels. The country has huge crop fields, a lot of great technology and competitive labour costs."
