G'day to all, just joined and had some interesting reading so far. I've been thinking about biodiesel for a while now and still have trouble bielieving it all. Can i really make my own fuel at a fraction of the cost by reusing an already used material, be independent of the greedy oil industry, and relieve pressure on our fragile eco system all at the same time with just a small amount of effort????? sounds too good to be true, but I'm definitaly gonna give it a go. As a beginner my head is a bit overwhelmed by all the variants of processing, so to break it down i'm concentrating on sourcing all the materials i will need first.
Methanol! where do i get it? I know hobby shops sell it in small quantities and i've been suggested to try an airport, but i've also read on here that u can use metholated spirits for titration, since metho is apparently 95% methanol, can I use this for making methoxide as well????
NAOH is easy to get but everyone reckons use KOH, where do i get KOH from.?? I know this question has been posted before but no one answered the question.
Anyhow answeres to these questions would be much appreciated so i can get the ball rollin, and i look forwad to contributing to this forum

      Welcome aboard.
You can start by getting hooked up with the good folk at melbournebiodiesel.org, if your in Viccy. I dont think metholated spirits is 95% methanol. I thought it was 98% alcohol. You can start asking around at petrol stations or performance car shops for methanol. KOH you can get it from some pool or other chemical suppliers. Again hook up with melbourne biodiesel and see if some one can sell you smaller quantities until you can justify upscaling.

      Good luck

No, methylated spirit is denatured ethanol (95%). No good for making BD as it contains 5% water.

Look in the section called 'Making Biodiesel' there is a sticky thread at the top called 'Location Specific Biodiesel Supplies'

Yeah, I'm back and trying to keep up with all the biodiesel developments around Oz. Hey - make sure that someone posts up some photos/stories about these workshops and the new club site at CERES in general, either on the melbournebiodiesel.org site or here with links! We'd all love to know, I just wish I could get there myself.

                Cheers,
                Robert.

                  Folks,
I will be taking a stack of pix of the workshops, and will post them anywhere we can get space. I know of a couple of pix hosting sites.
I would be happy to answer any questions, following the workshops, once I return home (1/4/06)

Darren, I will be looking forward to your review of the Melbourne workshop.
