I thought I'd draw attention to a subject that folks on the infopop forum are getting very excited about. It's a novel type of sulphonised carbon catalyst made by pyrolising sugar, then sulphonising it with sulphuric acid.

Some of the potential advantages of the solid catalyst is that it is reusable, quantity isn't critical, doesn't need to be dissolved in MeOH and doesn't make soaps in the reaction, WVO may not need to be completely dry, etc, etc...
It's not really for homebrewers at this stage but for those of us who like to get involved with the chemistry, it makes for interesting reading.
