Due to price increases by my supplier, I have had to increase the price of the filter bags I offer to members of the forum.

Peter,
I am just showing my age.

A couple of folks here refer to me as a "Cowboy" due to my insistence on wearing a hat when in the sun. I have had many skin cancers removed and the hat is my PPE.

When the server Avtar images were lost, I found this image "Old Cowboy" and thought that it suited me well.

Thanks for the concern.

Had I been drinking WVO, I may have been more like the "Marshmallow Man" from Ghostbusters ;)

NEWSFLASH - Australia Post now has a 5Kg express Post Satchel.

This makes it possible for me to offer even lower P&P for all filter bag sizes.

The filter bags are made by SEFAR Filter Specialists and I have a number of models in stock now:
The 3Kg bag quantities and prices remain as before:
. . . . . MODEL . . . . / . . . DESCRIPTION . . / Price to forum members . . . / max per Express Post bag / Total Package Price

P1S-NFWPENG005 / 5 Micron filter bag, 170mm (~7") diameter ring, 340 mm (~13") long / $10.00 ea / 5 / $60.00

P2S-NFWPENG001 / I Micron filter bag, 170mm (~7") diameter ring, 750 mm (~30") long / $13 each / 3 / $49.00

P2S-NFWPENG005 / 5 Micron filter bag, 170mm (~7") diameter ring, 750 mm (~30") long / $13 each / 3 / $49.00

For larger orders, the 5Kg bags allow me to post 12 short bags or 8 long bags for $20 P&P.

David,
I apologise, I have used the postage numbers for the 3Kg express post satchel, instead of the 500g Express post satchel.

Thanks for highlighting this.
It was not intended to be dearer than the eBay price. That eBay price was a trial to see whether the turnover would increase for a lower price (greater volume, lower margin trial). This was not a success, as I have not sold any at that price.

Here are the correct prices for Forum members:
2 short filter bags (1 or 5 micron) including express postage $27.00
1 long filter bag (1 or 5 micron) including express postage $20.00

Contact me by PM if you need further information or to place an order.

Thanks again,
Tony

Tony From West Oz

David,
I appreciate your support.
Unfortunately, I cannot afford to purchase 10 of each express satchel to get a 10% discount, and no one is paying me to do it either.

I feel that a $1.50 markup on the postage is reasonable on an $18.50 item (ie an 8% markup) and significantly less than would be charged elsewhere.

Similarly, the $3 kg express satchel is less than the $10 I ask for the postage of items needing that size satchel and less than $8.00 for the 500g express satchel for small orders..

I purchase the satchels in advance and it involves cost to hold satchels in readiness for an order.

My sales for one month (last month to be exact) was 1 filter bag. This month I have had orders for 3 bags. As you can see, I am not making millions in this enterprise.

Kind regards,
Tony

I have managed to squeeze more long filter bags into the 5Kg satchel, so the maximum number of Long filter bags in the 5Kg satchel has increased from 8 to 10, this means that the purchase of 10 Long filter bags is only $150, including Express P&P.
On a per-bag basis, this is $15 per bag!
How cheap can filtering get?

Thanks to my most recent customer who made an order for 10 bags, this is now available to other forum members.

In response to an enquiry from one of our NZ members, I have researched the cost of postage to NZ.
For parcels under 0.5Kg - $15.95
For parcels 0.5Kg - 1.0Kg - $19.95
For parcels 1.0Kg - 1.5 Kg - $27.95
Each filter bag weighs approx 166g, so 3 weigh 0.5Kg, 6 weigh 1Kg, etc
As packaging could push the package total weight over the upper limit of the bracket, I suggest that I only pack 2 in a <500Kg parcel, 5 in a 0.5Kg - 1.0Kg parcel and 8 in a 1.0Kg - 1.5Kg parcel.
This would make the cost of filters posted by Air Mail to NZ as follows:
2 short filter bags @ $10 each plus $15.95 = $35.95 (unit price including postage $18)
5 short filter bags @ $10 each plus $19.95 = $69.95 (unit price including postage $14)
8 short filter bags @ $10 each plus $27.95 = $107.95 (unit price including postage $13.50)

If you need the prices for the long filter bags, please let me know and I will calculate them.

I hope this helps our NZ members.

Sabai,
I have received your PM.
The prices in my post post of 20th July 2011 are still current.

Currently I am low on stocks of long 1 micron filter bags but have plenty of short filter bags of 1 or 5 micron rating. I have been advised that my order will take approx 28 days to be filled, so if you have an urgent need, please consider using the short filter bags in preference ot the long ones.

They do have filter housings but they are very exxy. They are rated for pressure so are made particuilarly strong to carry the pressure.

Hi Tony, I'm looking for the filter material so that I can sew my own bags to fit my set-up, can you get the material only? at the moment I buy bags take them apart and re-sew. is it reasonable to wash your bags or will it loose the moh rating? looking for 5 and 1 moh material. Cheers, Dom

Tony From West Oz

Dom,
I haven't needed to wash a filter bag since I started using filter liners made from old T shirts.
I just use an overlocker to sew the T shirt into a bag shape about 5 cm longer than the filter bag, and about the same diameter.
I put these inside the filter bag and they collect the worst of the solids in it. These can be disposed of or washed and re-used.

The material is available, contact SEFAR, they should have an office in Victoria - somewhere close to Melbourne.

Hi Dom,
I buy my bag filters from Seafar in Brisbane. It has been a few years since I have been there. They were located in a light industrial area and did not really expect much walk-in business. However the lady at the counter was very helpful. I brought a sample of what I wanted so she just had to go back into the stockroom and get what I wanted.
They do have a minimum order. I do not remember what it was but I am sure it was less than $100.

The bag I get is part number P1S-NFWPENG001.
It is rated at 1 micron and fits perfectly into the screw top opening of a beer home brew fermenter.

I just use my filters for biodiesel so when they get a bit dirty inside I turn it inside out and wash it. I have been using the same bag for 2 years now.

dom63
10th June 2013, 02:49 PM
I might just order 2 of the smaller bags from you - the 1 + 5 microns. How do I pay?
BTW I do use bunnings bags for pre-filter - do you think a t-shirt filter liner will be less than the 50 micron Bunnings(etc) bag?

oh and I use canola oil from a Japanese restaurant - I don't add thinners that might be why the filters clog so much (lasts about 2 months).

craigcurtin

An easy solution is to cut the top off a 20 litre steel drum (or if you have access to one - use a beer keg (Stainless will last forever)

When you have 4 or 5 bags that are full of fat - i just put 20 litres of oil into a keg i have, heat it up on a gas burner and then drop the bags in - takes about an hour all told - the hot oil will melt the fat out of the bags and you are ready to go - save the stuff in the keg for making Bio or until summer and it will be liquid and ready to use

i should also say that when i collect oil i just dump it all into a 44 and let it sit for as long as possible - then i just pump off the top into my filtering system - once the drum is over half full of thick sludge that has settled i pump it out into my BIO processor and use that for a batch.

I need to pass on a price increase from my supplier.
The following prices and filter ratings are available.

Including 500g flat rate tracked Satchel
2 short filter bags (1 micron only) including 500g tracked delivery $26.00
1 long filter bag (1 or 5 micron) including 500g tracked delivery $20.00

Including 3kg flat rate tracked Satchel
5 short filter bags (1 micron) including 3Kg tracked delivery $57.00
3 long filter bag (1 or 5 micron) including 3Kg tracked delivery $53.00

As 5 micron filters are only marginally coarser than the 1 micron, I will not be purchasing further stocks of the 5 micron bags.
If you currently filter to 5 micron, I recommend that you use a 1 micron bag instead. In my experience, there is no difference in flow rates of service life of the 1 micron Vs the 5 micron bags.
Should you wish to order filter bags, please PM me with your requirements.

Hi Tilly, Just interested in how you use the bags for filtering the bio. I'm using the 20 micron Baldwin filters and "5 micron water filters. Summer time they are great, but as we have been having some pretty cold days here lately these filters are blocking up quickly and costing heaps. So was wondering how you have set it up. Cheers and Thanks in Advance. Brenden

Hi Brendon,
I have a "new" (about 1 years use) 1 micron bag inside an "old" washed 5 micron bag. Both bags are hanging inside an old homebrew black plastic fermenting carboy.
I pour the biodiesel into the top of the filters and collect the filtered biodiesel out of the bottom carboy tap into the 20 litre containers ready for decanting into the Musso.
This spring I will probably remove both filters, turn them inside out and wash them, there is getting to be a lot of debris inside where I pour the biodiesel.
I expect to get another year or three out of them both before replacing one of them with a new 1 micron bag.

I imagine it is warmer here in Paradise because I have not had any problem with filters clogging. Also, if the biodiesel is not clear I do not pour it through the filter.

Tony From West Oz

Brendan,
Thanks for the email. I will reply with my contact and bank details.
How do you plan to use the filter bags? Are you considering pumping thru the bags? If so, you will need a vessel which can support the filter and take the pressure provided by the pump you choose.
Is your oil settled for long before filtering?
Do you cold filter, or heat your oil before filtering?
How much oil do you need per week?

I make 'liners' for the filter bags I use and these will collect any fats which accumulate in the filter. I like to leave at least 2 - 5 mm of fat inside the liner because the fats filter out any flour and other fine particulates from the oil, which otherwise pass thru the filter.
These filters are washable, but the rating will not be as specified after washing (probably one of the reasons Tilly uses a washed bag inside a newer unwashed bag)
If your oil gets a fair bit of high melting point oils, you would be advised to decant the liquid oil from the containers and combine the remaining oils into fewer containers for further settling. In Summer, any remaining HMP oils will make good fuel.

My fuel processing system uses 2 200L drums in an 'Up-flow' configuration and the output from these drums goes to a 3rd 200L drum. from which I pump into the filter bags. Like Tilly, I use home brew fermenters to support the filter bags and the filtered oil flows into 20 or 25 Litre cubies for storage and later, refueling.

I hope this helps,
Tony

Hi Tony, Will follow up the email this week thanks.
To answer your questions re use of the filter bags, firstly its for filtering bio, not oil.
I plan to remove the filter cartridge from a Baldwin tank filter, replace with a stand pipe (downpipe) and loosley fill the bowl with the sock filter. So the fuel is pumped to the bottom of the bowl and is forced through the filter material to the outlet. Hopefully the sump pump that we use will be strong enough to push the fuel through.. Advantages ...replace and wash the filter as required as oposed to replacing the filter each time @$20 a cartridge. thoughts... Cheers Brenden

Good thinking.
Just be sure to support the bag do that it cannot stretch or rupture due to the pressure involved (probably not much as you are not using a gear pump)
Let us know how it goes.

Tony

Hey Tony, just a note to let you know the bags arrived yesterday. Now to shape them for the filter and hopefully I'll be filtering the fuel this weekend.
Thank you. Cheers Brenden

Hi Tony. Just wondering if you still have these filter bags?

Hey Tony, Those bags have worked well. 1 bag I cut up and made a smaller bag to go around a Baldwin filter, this worked well I could see the fuel being filtered as it passesd from the wash tank to the storage tank, It did block quickly initially as the pump was too far down into the tank. A quick wash of the filter and reposition of the pump and all travelling well now. The second filter I have put in the top of a drum to drain into another drum for all the old fuel around to place, this works well also. Could you tell me how long it would take to filter 20L of WVO through these filter socks? It seems that it would be a time expensive project. Cheers Brenden

Brenden,
That is like asking "how long is a piece of string"?
There are too many variables for me to answer you with any chance of accuracy.
some of these are:
# Oil temperature
# Presence of HMP oils
# Presence of contaminants to be filtered out (Lots of contaminants slows filtering)
# How many litres of oil have passed thru filter already
Etc

I have 3 old filter bags on the go and oil temperature is around 15C. I can easily filter 20 litres per day using these old filters, but I do need to scrape out HMP oils on a regular basis (every 2nd day) - This means every day, I change out one 20 litre clean oil drum . The next day I change out another drum, and the next day, the 3rd drum gets changed. This oil has been up-flow settled for at least 30 days before filtering.
With warmer oil, with no HMP oils, with new filters you should be able to filter more than 20 Litres per day per filter. Performance will degrade with throughput and with dirty oils.
With relatively clean oil, at 40C, I can filter 20 litres per hour.
When filtering petrol, I can't pour it in faster than it drains out.

I hope this helps,
Tony

Tony, Are you just doing the 1 micron bags as need a 10 micron too.. (the short length bags).

Is there a articular reason for the 10 micron bag?
If you are doing "staged filtering" then just pre-filter thru tee shirt material. I use a Tee shirt material "Sock" inside the 1 micron filter bags to collect any fats and larger particles. This can be removed and emptied, or simply replaced with another Tee shirt sock.

Tony
