Drax, a UK electricty generator, will use up to 1.5m tonne/year of renewable biomass under plans for a £50m deal to produce 10 per cent of its electricity from biomass, according to yesterday's Guardian Newspaper. The Drax Power station consumes between 7m and 11m tonne coal/year.
Drax, a large coal-fired powerstation in the UK, is moving into biofuels, in an attempt to cut down the number of carbon credits that it will buy in the future.
It will be interesting to see what that kind of demand will do to the price of biomass in the UK, if the plant is built by 2009.
