  • Types of Heaters

Just a quick question, looking to set up the normal 200lt stell drum , and was wondering what type of heater and thermostat do you use.
Im looking to have the oil circulae with a pump and heat at same time , with a controlled thermostat to regulate it to around 55 deg.
What system is not expensive but good? ny help appreciated and thanks in advance

There are many different ways of doing this, depending on how much you want to spend or how handy you are at improvising and modifying other types of heater elements.

The neatest way would be to weld a 2"BSP socket near the bottom of the drum. Or you could invert the drum and cut the top out (formerly the bottom) and use the 2" bung hole and use a screw-in heating element such as these made by Grimwood:

There are also elements that hang over the side of a 44, such as these:

Then of course you could use an old domestic water heater that comes ready made with a heater, thermostat and insulation. AKA Appleseed.

I recently found in hard rubbish, on the side of the road, the element from a domestic deep fry, It would sit easily on the side of a drum, but I would test the temp with a $10 cappucino thermometer from a Kitchen/ home wares shop, as it's more sensitive and has a Red area above the magic temperature of the split. And pay attention to to turn down the thermostat at the more accurate reading.
