Please have a look at this thread http://www.biofuelsforum.com/svo_use...html#post42471 for reasons why this device is unlikely to work as planned by the designer.

who says it has to be used only for SVO?

It's ideal for biodiesel to eliminate clouding on really cold days.

No one, but the principles are the same, heating fuel with the GP will have little effect on the fuel temperature unless the coolant is as hot or hotter than the fuel .

Im not following. This is an electric heater ... the temperature of the coolant is irrelevant.

                whoflungdung,
Your filter looks just like a heated filter I saw previously. It had a coolant connection on the top, looking like yours. It also had GPs in 2 of the 4 ports on the top housing.

The fuel connections were on the other 2 ports of the top housing.
If I am wrong about your filter, I apologise, but it does look (from your photo) like the one I saw some time ago.
My comments then were the same, the coolant HE would reduce the temperature of the fuel (added by the GPs), until the coolant temperatue rose above the temperature of the incoming fuel.

Can you post a photo of the top of the top housing, so it is clear what the connections are?

                Thanks,
                Tony.

                  Re: Twin heated diesel filter

                  Hello Whoflungdung,

                  Thanks for posting the photo.

I am interested in this unit...

I would like to ask some questions please.

Do you have or can you supply more of this filter?

Glow plugs fitted to this filter - Are they available in Australian market?

Also what is the distance between GP tips inside the filter head?

A photo of inside filter head would be perfect please.

                  Thanks

                    Re: Twin heated diesel filter

Just a quick thought: if the GP were in the oil and not coolant that would have to work? Also when the car is cold the thermostat should be closed and therefore the water not circulating around the engine.
For any heat exchange to work properly should not the fluids by running in opposite directions? Therefore would there not be minimal cooling by not circulating coolant?

                    Just a thought.

                      Re: Twin heated diesel filter

                      isalow.
The engine thermostat only blocks flow to the radiator, not the heater circuit, which is where this would be connected, to get heat earlier and at a more constant temperature.

Contra flow heat exchangers are more efficient, but not exxential for heat transfer.

Regardless of whether the GP is in the oil or metal or coolant, the heat will be transferred from the GP to the oil/metal/coolant and then to the other materials around that material. If the coolant is flowing, any heat transferred to the coolant through the metal will be taken to the engine (which initially is cold), thus much of the GP heat will be wasted.

If you wish to use both GP and Coolant heating of the oil, put the GP heater between the Coolant HE and the filter/IP. This will allow it to heat the oil and not have the oil cooled by the coolant.

The oil will be cooled by the metal of the IP anyway.

So, why not just wait for the engine to warm up before selecting the Used Cooking Oil fuel.

                      Regards,
                      Tony
