  • methoxide bulk mixing ?

I need to mix 180 liters methanol and koh +/- 11kg
Can it be mixed in a 200 liter steel drum, must the drum be sealed while mixing or the top can be open ?

You will probably turn that drum into a bomb if you try and keep it sealed whilst mixing that much in one go. Yes you can have it open but you need to make sure it is vented (preferably do the mixing outside)

Obviously if the fumes are in the open be careful about spark and flame protection

      Rubbish.

I have done this many times and even went to the trouble of putting a pressure gauge on the drum bung one time. I forget the number now but I do remember it being so low as to be of no consideration at all. It is only the air warming up that is creating pressure. If it were severe Drums that sat in the sun would be exploding all the time.

I don't recommend mixing all the meth in one go however as it is too hard to dissolve. ( tried that too!)
Mixing it in in several batches is much easier over all and for those worried about pressurising the drum, it also gives it a chance to vent.

Thanks for that Peter - actually thinking about it - that seems like a low number for the amount of KOH he is adding doesn't it ?

I know if i put 2KGs of KOH into a 25 litre drum with Methanol it gets bloody hot and i have had the lids pop a couple of times.

What pressure did the 44 get to when you put the gauge onto it ?

Yeah that's about the concentration I use, and the MeOH actually boils.

Not sure why he's making up so much at once, but remember that the solution is unstable, probably due to carbonation. That is, when you make it up, use it or lose it

            Hi Mark,
You have been busy here on the forum today.

Now that is interesting. Every chemist I have talked to has said that as long as you keep the lid closed on the methoxide it will last for a long time. Have you actually performed any testing on this?

If I can provide you with any further help just ask. I have a lot of experience.

Its getting hot and popping because of the air in the drum. I mix 200 litres with 11-12kg KOH and it seals after a good stir with a pastic stake. Works for me. Actually I mix 120 litres with 12 kg as I use the first 80 litres for the acid stage, slow and patient.
