  • Can Biodiesel be stored in Diesel Tanks?

    Good Morning Guys,

Hope you all are doing well. I'm planning to buy a new tank to store biodiesel for my farm equipment. Not sure which tank to get. Will poly diesel tank be a good option to store biodiesel? Adding a list of tanks I'm planning to choose from. These are all Diesel Tanks and I'm unable to find a tank specifically made for Biodiesel -

Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks

Yes, biodiesel can be stored in diesel / petrol fuel tanks.
It can also be stored in IBC (1000L cubes) or 200L drums.
It depends on how much biodiesel you are storing, whether the biodiesel is washed (unwashed biodiesel can have glycerol byproduct dropping out for a long time after processing. and the amount of fuel used. (While I have no evidence to confirm this, I believe that long term storage of biodiesel may be improved by using CO2 to fill the headspace of the storage vessel.)

Re: Can Biodiesel be stored in Diesel Tanks?

I store mine in a couple of IBCs, they are out of the sun but I've had them close to 10 years and no problems so far. If you are thinking of a used tank, you may want to clean it first as the bio will take off any crap that is in the tank and that will end up in your filters. Not so much fun if it stops your engine on the side of the road in the dark while raining.

Thank you so much for the information guys - I have decided to get the Fuelcube Self Bunded Storage Tank from A-FLO Equipment as they are providing some discount and installation too.

        Much appreciated. Many thanks

Hello; I just now read the thread . I've stored biodiesel in small glass bottles with Teflon screw caps for years . In some of the storage bottles at lower temperatures some crystals form and drop out . This might be called "fractional crystallization" . Depending on how I made the biodiesel , additional glycerine might drop out . Removing the biodiesel for use might be done from off the top of the fuel storage tank liquid .
