  • Mazda WL-T engine - suitable for biodiesel?

    Good morning all,

I'm considering purchasing an older diesel ute in the near future to play with some alternative fuels such as WVO and making my own biodiesel as a hobby.

There seems to be 2001-2006 Ford Courier/Mazda Bravo B2500 pop up on the second hand market on the regular, these have an indirect injection diesel engine (Mazda WL-T) with a Zexel rotary injection pump, its one of the latest year model diesel utes thats IDI and only has very basic electronics for the fuel side, no fancy multi hole high pressure electronically controlled injectors.

Has anyone got any experience with WVO and biodiesel on these utes? It looks like its right on the break point between a modern ute but still being old enough to be tolerant to alternative fuels.

I've included some Mazda documentation on the engine below which explains its fuel system if this is useful for anyone to review below

    Thanks all

No experience with that engine but I doubt bio would be an issue with it. I know of one person who ran bio on one when they were fairly new and didn't have any issues.

I recommend that you start with a blend of WVO and Diesel and increase the WVO % as you gain experience with the vehicle.
That is how I gain experience with vehicles I have never used WVO in before.

        Yeah,
Tony from OZ, damn good to see you and Tilly still kicking about..
BUT blending WVO with diesel I found to be problematical in that I always formed something between a filter blocking sludge and a semi set glop. I got round it by blending the WVO with Kerosine, a more purified form of Diesel if you like....
I did a lot of that back when and I would still recommend that.

PS. Filter the WVO to 10 microns just as cold as you can get it FIRST.

            G'day Bushpig,
It has been a very long time. I was just thinking about you a few weeks ago and wondering how the Hyundai i30 stood up to using boidiesel.
I still have all those open-top 200 litre drums you gave me. Are you still biodieseling?

Never tried it, It would have been fine as far as I can tell with no burn off problem in the earlier ones anyway... So cheap on fuel I didn't need to make the BioD.... plus I got too big and busy.

however, now semi retired and on the cusp of full retirement I am re-entering. My old GQ Nissan Patrol would love some more ....

Yes it's fine. I ran B100 in one of those for years, as a courier. After about a year the catalytic converter started to clog up so you might want to remove that
