  • CAV filters???

    Hello
Im am looking to install a CAV filter, ...I have a '95 troopy 1hz engine. Im located in the pilbara WA. I have read forums here, and elsewhere (but i didnt post on the other site!! hehe) and have got myself confused about which filter setup I need. I have read about spin on adapters, full assemblies, which apparently can restrict full flow, and simple swap overs. I was under the impression that it was possible to buy a setup, filter and water/sediment trap that simply screws onto the existing Toyota filter head, am I wrong? Because of my location post is my only way of purchasing so I have to be sure of what I buy. I got a price from a retailer in perth for $105+ $15 for filters, I have also seen two types of CAV filters $77 and $120 on a wa website, and wasnt sure of the difference. so Im after some information on what others have done or recommend. Obviously simple is best. Ill lay off the coffee in the meantime, and hope someone can help me out. cheers.
aquired my first lot of b100 today, woohoo!!

    Re: CAV filters???

I believe that there is a direct replacement for the toyota Landcruisers, which replaces the stock filter head and allows use of the CAV style filters which are around $5 each in purchases of 10 or more.

I have not heard of an adaptor which uses the stock filter head.

Others may have heard different so wait for others to comment.

    Regards,
    Tony

      Re: CAV filters???

The "spin on" type CAV filter system that replaces the OEM filter but leaves the original head assy is the simplest one to use and when you can't get a CAV and can get OEM you just spin off the CAV adaptor and on goes the OEM. I have one on my 80 series 1HD-T and have no issues.

Do you have a link to it so Sherpa can source one?

        Thanks,

As I said, mine was on the truck when I git it so not 100% on where to get one.

However, the guys who I know will not only have one but will do a good deal are ENZED in Fyshwick. I get all my fuel , oil and air cleaners for the truck there and they have a thousand different fuel filter systems for all sorts of vehicles and plant equipment.

I bought one from 'Wagga Tractor' and it came in Denco packaging. I think Denco have them made and distribute through Wagga Tractor, 4WD Systems and others. I would think direct from Denco would be cheapest.
Some on this forum have trouble getting the CAV filter elements to seal and end up with air leaks. I have found them to be good and reliable.

                      Re: CAV filters???

I believe that most of the people having issues with CAV filters leaking are sucking the fuel thru them, rather than pushing the fuel thru them.
If sucking thru them, small leaks are harder to find.
If pumping thru them, the leaks are apparent as soon as fuel pressure is applied.

                      I hope this helps,

                          Re: CAV filters???

The only problems I've had with CAV filters is the Fleetguard filters seem to have a slightly larger OD for the top housing,I have to screw it on tight and use multi grips to try and press the filter square in to the housing,if you don't get the filter square guaranteed to leak.
My filter came with the Delphi 296 and it fit in the top housing beautifully. It only seems to be the fleetguard filters.
Also the top o ring has a T on it and the bottom has a B on it,this may just be Fleetguard though.

                            Re: CAV filters???

Wow thanks for that OCSUM - i have changed about two million of these and have never noticed the T and B on the rings.

I typically leave the top O ring in for 4 or 5 filter changes and only change the bottom one which is the more problematic one.

The top one usually stick into position and will stay there when removing the filter element

Tony is right about the filters leaking - if you use a pusher pump it is immediately apparent as fuel will leak out of the side of the filters - when i change one i wipe them completely clean as the final step and then i stop about 5 minutes after changing one and check for any tell tale leak. If they are under vacuum - it is much harder - luckily my surf will self prime so i kick it over for 10 second bursts with 1 minute rest in the middle (for the starter to cool down) until i see the bowl completely fill - if it does not fill after about 5 cranks - i will tighten it up further and check for correct alignment.

I too have found the HAF filters seem to seat better - but i do not believe they do as good a job as the FF167a - i think i remember a heated debate on this forum about 18 months ago about this.
