  • Merc ML270

I might sound like a bit of a soft co#k but has anyone seen or spoken to someone who runs an ML270 5 cyl diesel merc ?
I know they are direct injection but thought maybe they might handle Bio ok.
would I need to run a FPHE with Bio in a direct injection engine if I didn't want any problems ?
I'll have to admit that the bio isn't washed but settled over several months.

I can't say the thought of collecting oil in an ML270 would look all that good but hey I'm an IT technician looking to save money and drive a comfortable car at the same time.

    Suz,

Bio in a direct injection engine is fine, may end up with dirty njectors after 150 to 200K km. Make sure the injection pump seals are suitable, most other things can be fixed. I would wash the bio, air sry it and this will get rid of the methanol and cause caustic and soaps to drop out. Store it in a dark place light will cause degradation.

Well , I went ahead and purchased the Merc and so far I couldn't be happier.

It goes nicely and it has AIR CON !!! that in itself is a big bonus. lots of power and an easy vehicle to drive.

I found a really nice white 2002 version that appeared to have been treated nicely. 150K on the clock isn't too many Km's in 10 years.
So far I'm at 10 percent or B10. I haven't noticed any changes to performance and will get the cheep fuel filter in place this weekend.

It doesn't seem to have much lag at all.it has lots of go and is very easy to drive in traffic.

So much more powerful than most cars I've driven apart from v6 commodores but plenty of torque.
          Also is very quiet.

              Re: Merc ML270

He says its an older 2002 model so its Bosch VE pump stuff. Fine on B100 in fact B100 is better for it as it eliminates wear in the VE pump, keeps the injectors cleaner (I have a theory that the absorbed moisture steam cleans it all the time).

My Toyota 1HDFT head had to come off for another reason and it was spoteless inside, injectors cleanish and spraying well at 250K km, 100K kmn B100 so I suspect this one willl be much the same.

I will tutor grasshopper Suzuddis on acid/base/base B100 that way he will get good bio every time.

PS do not use a second filter, your asking for issues and it just doubles the restriction on the pump. A lift pump as you know fixes this. It is a candidate for such a pump too btw. I am sure a CAV filter will be cheaper than Merc filters too!

thanks for that. I will look into the CAV filter but I haven't had the covers off yet to have a look at the filter.
It's probably got a hundred wires going into it.

It's been more than 10k Km's on B100 and still going strong.

Mercedes 2002 ML 270 Turbo intercooled Diesel 10,000 km's with B100. no problems and goes like a rocket now with a chrome Bio Badge.

                    Add that to the list.
I am yet to have the engine covers off but it's getting serviced again soon so I'll ask when it's in.

Very interested i this as I'd like to get either an ML or an E300.

Does anyone know what years the VE pump spanned on these Vehicles? I have VE on both my cars now and I'm running straight WVO with no problems at all. I'm blending 5-10 ULP atm but most of the time they run single tank with no blending and start and run fine.

I'd be plenty happy if I could run one of these on a blend.

                        Re: Merc ML270

Well I have taken one cover off and found a ten plate FPHE and a thirty plate FPHE. This really surprised me.
I can't yet post photos so I am sorry. There is a common rail for the fuel but I don't know what type of injectors yet.
I haven't got the other larger cover off yet so don't know where the oil filter is.

                        Will keep everyone posted.

                          Re: Merc ML270

FPHE MERC.pdfattached should be a PDF with some photos of the flat plate heat exchangers. they appear to be factory fitted so i'd say being a European vehicle it's probably for fuel heat.
Sorry for the poor quality pictures.
the first image in the set is of the 30 plate and I took this photo under the EGR valve on the right side of the engine.
the others are above . you can easily see the 10 plate and if you look harder then you can see where the 30 plate is located.

                              Re: Merc ML270

                              Suzuddis,
I agree, the FPHE look to be factory fitted. The small diameter moulded coolant line on the 10 plate supports this. The fuel hoses do not give any clue, but they are OEM type hose and factory clamps.
I do not see the other coolant hose connection, so suspect it is behind the FPHE.
The pressed metal behind the FPHE looks like it is the bracket, holding it to the engine.
With the 30? plate FPHE, there also seems to be a pressed steel bracket which may be part of the FPHE, supporting it on the engine.

I hope that you have a long engine life, despite the car's previous life on petroleum diesel.

With all that heat in the fuel system, are you interested in running WVO?

                              Regards,
                              Tony
