We have a couple of the W202 C250 Turbodiesels and they are happy on biodiesel or straight vegetable oil (Note, for straight vegetable oil, fuel tank design makes it difficult to use more than 1/2 tank before air in fuel becomes an issue). These are of 1998 and 1999 manufacture years.

The W210 E300 Turbodiesel of the same years uses the same technology and should be happy on biodiesel or straight vegetable oil, or a blend of diesel and veg oil. This car has a more forgiving fuel tank when using vegetable oil.

I'd have a search on the infopop site. It's a UK site that has a lot more contributors than this one.

Alexander Noac of ANC / ELSBETT conversion technology used an E220 as his test vehicle for using SVO in CRD vehicles. Look up his site for his conversion kits.
He changes injection timing and amount. etc, for best performance on WVO. I expect that Mercedes CRD cars of that vintage would be fine on biodiesel.

As with most diesel fuel systems there may be material incompatibility issues with seals in the fuel system.

            I hope this helps,

Actually I have had no problem with 100% biodiesel in a 2 litre PD VW caddy except with the dealer who threw away all the bio in the tank when it got towed in having let my wife down in the back of beyond. It turned out to be a crack in the plastic guts of the fuel filter that was allowing air to come in from the tank return and I would blame vw for that. But outside of that this has been a nightmare car with the new dealer unable to find or fix simple issues like a gummed EGR valve (not a bio fault either). One day the alternator clutch exploded -there had been warning signs like small pieces of super hard metal in the flat belt. And now at 200k the thing no longer goes thanks to a double mass flywheel which I have to replace at great expense.

                gsmiley,
I take it that apart from biodiesel being great in the engine, the rest of the engine is cr^p?
Do you think that this is a common situation with the PD engines?

And at 125 thousand the camshaft and lifters were stuffed. It was a design fault to do with the PD configuration - the 4 cam lobes for the injectors are about 35 mm wide, so the rest of the cams are less than 19 mm and it wore depressions in the lifters and rounded the cam edges. I had the camshaft reground which you are not supposed to be able to do but the Melbourne people did their hardness check and it was still OK and there are super hard black lifters available. But its all nicely made - neat little replaceable camshaft bearing shells you can fit with Prussian blue and scrape with the squared back of a hacksaw blade. Who else does that?
Timing is done with special camshaft and crank holding pegs and an adjustable 2 part camshaft sprocket and it has a big solid belt. And now the stinking dual mass clutch and flywheel. I hoped it was only the hydraulics which I replaced first. They are expensive, plastic and the master comes out backwards in a single assembly with the clutch pedal (have to remove most of of dash) and then its impossible to bleed the b***, after you get the air out of the slave as normal the trick is that you use a syringe to blow fluid from the reservoir INTO the bleed screw. But back to the clutch/flywheel. It will cost about a thousand dollars from a discount supplier, dealer quote 2300, I don't know if that included the engine seal, throw-out bearing or the arm which has a bad reputation. All the bolts are single use. In short it ain't the peoples ' car anymore, it is a gold mine for the dealers.

Oh dear sounds like you are over the VW. When they go bad it gets complicated and expensive. Ours is a 1.9 PD and so far the motor has been very good apart from the EGR which I clean now and again, and have choked back with a restrictor. I thought a manual gearbox would be a cheaper thing to have in the long run compared to the DSG gearbox. Now I'm not so sure. On ours the door locks go wrong, and our sunroof has a mind of its own but thats all really. Great car to drive but the better half wants to get a new car and I am not supporting a newer VW. Thinking of a Merc even an older one say 2005 - 2008, C220 model. Do they have these kind of issues?

The Mercedes C250 Turbodiesels & the E300 Turbodiesels from '97-99 are good on veggie or biodiesel. They are also indirect injection and have an in-line Injector Pump.
I have no experience with later engines.
Contact Alexander Noac for his opinion.Regards,
