  • Dino /bio compare

While on holiday I had to put some Dino in my toyota, Its estima with a 2.2 turbo charged and inter-cooled engine. It was a 40 degree day and It usually runs B100. As soon as I drove out of the service station, the temperature gauge when up a couple of bars, and the performance went down (turbos dont like heat). Also got black smoke when accelerating. We also noticed the engine sounded louder, and the smell out of the exhaust stinks, like,....well diesel. bloody horrible stink-in crap
I have had a friend say that his hilux did the same thing.
Has any one else had the same experience?

    Re: Dino /bio compare

Can't really see any physical reason this would happen.
the difference in viscosity between bio and dino is not enough to affect the fuel metering. Unless you have had the injection timing to suit bio so it's out for dino I don't think there should be any drawback in performance to using Dino. It has a higer inergy content than bio so should go better. The temp rise as soon as leaving the servo was probably heat sink when the thing was stopped. The black smoke is more likley due to just the way the fuels burn. Bio burns more white than black where dino is the opposite.

I put some Dino in mine the other day as I got caught short running around and the thing ran better much as I hate to admit it. The timing is not changed so it should run better on the fuel it was set up for. The temp certainly didn't go up and I didn't notice any more smoke that usual, in fact at night, it looked less. The engine sounding louder is actually a good thing from an efficency POV. Quiet with Bio/ veg may be a desirable side effect from a NVH POV, but in actual fact the diesel clack is an indication of the engine working well.

I don't mind the smell of Dino as long as it's not too strong. I came home and put more than twice as much veg in the tank as dino but I could still smell the dino especialy on start up.

When I had my Lux, I had very similar issues it would run a lot worse on dino than bio or WVO and poor out a heap of black smoke, once back on Bio, smoke gone :-) I asked my mechanic, he just shook his head, laugh and said; "That pretty much shows you how much crap there is in the diesel fuel"
He is just converting his cruiser to run on WVO. :-)

Thanks bueff it good to know others have had the same experience. The estima has only got a very small tank ,55 liters I think, so its a bit pain-fill on a trip. does you lux heat up on dino?

never noticed any heat differences with the hilux, only smoke and rough idle :-) I saw 3 diesel guys, all said the usual "its the bio" thing, and looked funny when I said they should be happy to get us bio fuelers, since normal diesels never seem to break down, judging by their dislike for bio and WVO :-)
