Gday Tony! Cheers for that - much appreciated.

yeah..right. years ago,.,...I used a powder (Marcus from Veggie Cars?) to remove h20 and then 2 sets of filter paper (forget the micron rating).

Will try and find your up flow diagram (im a bit new here.....so trying to suss it all out).

so use a plastic drum first? theh can filter/ swap into a metal one? either way - if you have a summary somewhere on how you do yours from go to wo....would be ace!

    :-)

    Roro,
Settling will remove any H2O from the veggie oil, along with most of the solid contaminants.
Check out the Up-Flow settling diagram that I posted last week.
Please use a plastic drum for the first settling drum, to avoid the corrosion issue that I had. My first drum started to weep moisture from it's bottom. I have since replaced it with another steel drum. My last one lasted over 10 years (I couldn't get a plastic one in time
    .

    Ah...thanks Johnno.....good to know.

Can you recommend any filters for Vegie oil?

On that point too....where and what micron filters to buy? the powder that removes the h20?

    Cheers

Don’t use the ‘dunny roll’ filter with veg oil, they lose structure, collapse, form channels and let everything through.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. Good information....

Um - right - stuff to process. Firstly......if I do this Id like to keep it as simple as possible. I had t rebuild my engine years ago after dodgy diesel (what a sag that was!)...so I now run with Jackmaster (dunny roll) filters (for both fuel & oil)....to hopefully save the same fate. Can VO run ok through these finer filters?

I run a 1HDT on veggie, just rebuilt the engine after my neighbour used it whilst I was away and failed to purge with diesel and it sat for 5 days. Took about 20000 klms for it to suddenly start using lots of oil and clogging up the sump, but it had done over 500000 klms and about 200000klms on veggie.

I run a 3 tank system, main and auxiliary tanks are VO, 3rd is under the bonnet and holds 2.5lt of diesel which is used to purge the engine of VO. I re-routed the return line so it goes back into the iP when driving and when purging the fuel goes to the tank so it purges fast. I set the turbo timer to 5 minutes and and that is long enough to purge the system of VO. Then I switch return line back to the iP and switch to VO for when starting again next day.

A couple of tips, make sure you install an EGT gauge, it's the best way to know engine temps and in my opinion using VO in a Di motor can make them run a bit warmer because of the heated VO. Also installed a 3inch straight through exhaust and an inter cooler along with a beefed up turbo, now it ruins really smooth and cool. When starting I always warm the engine for 5 minutes on VO, that allows everything to warm up and not put strain on the engine. If starting on VO is fuel, it has enough dino in it from the purging to not do andy harm before it's fully warmed by the HE which is situated before the main filter and throw away filter, which sits in the engine bay after the inline pump I installed.

The inline pump is used for pumping when changing a the throw away filter, the switch for the inline pump is situated on in the engine bay so it can be used to pull fuel from the tank to fill the new filter before connecting it back to the system and use those clamps with the handle which you can wind closed. It takes just over 1 minute to change a filter and get back on the road and the car tells me when the throw away filter is getting clogged, you lose a bit of power in high revs. I also have a couple of inline filters which can be cleaned, but on the road that creates a mess so have stuck with the ones I had made for using VO.

For anyone interested, have a lot of these filters will never use as they sent me to many, so reselling them for what I paid plus postage, which is $2.40 each and sell then in batches of 10, plus postage and you will pay around $4-5 each in shops for them now I believe.

    What Tony said is correct,

1HDT engine is a direct injection engine where as mine is a 1HZ after market turbo is indirect. Both will run fine on SVO but the trick is purge before you stop. Landcruiser diesel rebuilds are expensive.

    Cheers,

A friend of mine (Tim) runs his 1HDT on a 2 tank setup.
The 1HDT is not suited for single tank as the injector nozzles get clogged when the oil is left in them at shutdown, so you need to start and shutdown on diesel, but can run all day and night on veggie, so long as you shut down on diesel each time. When doing a hot start, you can changeover from diesel to veggie as soon as the engine is running, but even for short stops you must purge with diesel.
Overall, diesel usage should be minimal, unless you are doing lots of short trips.

A friend of Tim's lent his Cruiser to a family member who ran it on veggie only. This resulted in coked rings and a major overhaul.
