  • Landcruiser 1HDFTE 2001 on veg oil?

    Hello Comrades in WVO

I wish to know how/if I can run my 2001 diesel Landcruiser on SVO/WCO on a twin tank system.

I currently run a 2005 Musso on a twin tank system with no problems at all.

However I understand there may be issues with the fuel injection specs for the Landcruiser if I proceed with that conversion.

Has anyone had success with the 2001 Toyota Landcruiser running on straight veg with diesel start up? Is it a case of altering the injector chip or similar? Is that even possible?

    Thanks in advance!

    Mickey,
I do believe that the 1HDT engine is direct injection (if it does not have glow plugs then it is most likely Direct Injection)
In that case you should ALWAYS shut down on diesel to avoid polymerised oil blocking the injector nozzle holes when you shut down on veggie oil.
Any change to the spray pattern can cause liquid oil to get onto the compression rings and cause them to bind in the piston grooves. This will cause severe bore wear. (you do not need that)
If it has glow plugs you may be able to use 100% Veggie or at least a blend of 75% veggie 25% diesel.

      Thanks for the reply Tony.

My 2001 Landcruiser 1 HD-FTE has a pre-heat light that goes off very quickly after turning the key so I think it may have glow plugs and electronic fuel injection.

So would that mean its not compatible with WVO blend OR a heat exchanger twin tank WVO/Diesel start-up and purge system?

I have thought of running the auxiliary tank on 100% diesel and the main tank on either a blend or 100% WVO if at all possible, to avoid the polymerisation that you mention above..

      Thanks
      Mikey

        Mikey,
If it has glow plugs, then it should run happily on a blend or straight used cooking oil.
If in a cold climate then use a blend, and/or possibly with a heat exchanger to warm up the oil prior to the fuel filter.
I have a 2004 Prado 3L diesel and it is happily running on a blend of 75% used cooking oil and "shandy" (a result of people putting petrol in their diesel tank and having to get it pumped out) that I collect from several garages in my area. You could use a similar blend of WVO:diesel.
The only modifications I have made are a simple heat exchanger (a piece of 10mm copper pipe inside a 150mm piece of 20mm copper pipe with coolant passing thru the 20 mm pipe and fuel in the 10mm pipe) and a prefilter which has a clear case, so I can see if there is any sediment in the prefilter. Both added in the last 3 months.
After having the vehicle for 12 months, I have replaced the stock fuel filter due to lack of power and check engine light coming up.
        No issues since filter replacement.

As long as its not common rail diesel you can try WVO, but maybe blend first. Two tank with diesel purge is best.
1980 Mercedes 300TD 2 tank setup mainly using SVO and some WVO
1987 Toyota Landcruiser, 2 tank setup mainly using WVO
2006 Musso Sports - SVO two tank, stock dino, 140lt veggie

Tony, the 1HDT is direct injection, been running my series 80 on SVO for more than 5 years and it's imperative you start and stop on diesel. Bought mine with an engine which had done over 500000klms, but still went well. About, when I 3 years ago had to have an operation on my hand and my neighour took my car home and failed to stop on diesel when I got home realised this and started it up, which was fine but over the next 10000klms it started to use oil and finally had so much blow by that the engine oil mixed with SVO turning the sumo into glug. Had to rebuild the engine and now it's done over 50000klms and goes like a rocket with an after market super turbo, 3 inch straight through exhaust and intercooler. The thing that has really improve the performance and economy is I had it dyno tuned and it's a wonderful car to drive getting 10kpl om a long rum.

If your gonna run one of these engines on SVO, get it dyno tuned, I have long range tanks and a 2.5lt start tank. Carrying 265lt of fuel gets me a long way and it only uses 1lt to flush the system. I also curt off the return fuel line when driving and when stopping open it up so it flushed really fast and on the turbo timer, shuts itself down.
